There are easier ways..2-do-that.
Mark M

which part are you talking about?
the shiny finish
or the swirl marks

the shiny finish isnt all caused by the wax
the most important thing to a shiny finish is the surface prep
if i just put that wax on my car without prepping the surface
it wont look like that
KB

I think most are missing the point. Would you call it new/vintage?
bill f

I believe the instructions say "don't wax in direct sun" and "just do a small area at a time".

Ya I know -sometimes the instructions are right!
gaston

I had no idea that certain bottles of wax were spliced with nano-flux capacitors! That pic looks awesome by the way... :)

Pretty much any wax does this. It dries to a powdery haze after application (back half in pic), and then you polish it off (front half in pic). I wax my New Beetle at least twice a year. It keeps the paint looking new. Even better when used in conjunction with a clay bar - now THAT stuff is truly excellent. You can feel the surface getting as clean as possible. Then apply the wax. My 11 y.o. red "Ladybug" looks much better than my co-worker's 3 y.o. Focus (to his dismay.)
ladybugewa

Yeah, I hate it when my New Beetle turns into a '70s Beetle. It's then, and only then that I know it's time for another coat of wax.

Attention: Clutch noise?

I drive a manual car. Every morning I start my engine and
let it run for five minutes. Then only I take off my car.
The problem here is, when I release my clutch after
shifting to second gear, there's a noise (spring like) but,
as it goes to third, fourth and fifth gear, the noise reduces.
Apart from that, the noise is more louder if the engine
is let to run less than five minutes esp in the morning.
Normally, when it comes to afternoon and evening,
there's no noise. What could be the possible problem?

you probably need a new clutch...they don't last forever.
Chrys

clutch or throw out bearing may be going out, or may be universal joints/drivedhaft or axle.

thrush bearing
Natasha

By your description, it cannot be the release bearing. This will only make a noise when you push your clutch in and with your foot on the clutch.

It sounds as if it is a problem within the gearbox as you say that it occurs after shifting to second gear and then continues as you go through the rest of the gears (release bearing would be same noise regardless of gear you are changing).

I would check the gearbox oil, It seems strange that you say it goes away as the day progresses which would hint that it is not mechanical damage. Check gearbox oil if OK, maybe change oil - viscosity may mot be right.
Replica

What I think you're referring to is transmission whine. Like previously stated, get your gear oil levels checked.

It is not your throwout bearing, you'd know if you had issues with that.

Is a VW beetle a safe car?

I am turning 17 in a year and a half, and need to start saving for a car. But i need a goal to reach, and i was thinking about a beetle.

The original beetle is about as safe as a nail-bomb, but they are fun, and economical if in good repair. Im not sure how the new bug fares in crash tests but im sure it miles apart from the originals.
kevin

i wanted one and today my grandma was like thats not a safe car but she didnt really say why
JoNaS <3

Old Beetles are not, prone to burning. The new one, yes. The New Beetle is based on the Passat and it passed the stringent crash test standards by ADAC.
Jay

If you are talking about the new Beetle, it is probably as safe as most other cars on the road. With regard to the new Beetle it lacks the character and charisma the older air-cooled Beetles had. Therefore, if this is the car you were thinking about, I would look a bit wider at the car market.

Now if you were thinking of the old air-cooled classic beetle, you cannot go wrong. They are reliable if looked after (regardless of what many people say), they are easy to work on with parts still reasonably easy to obtain and most of all you will discover what motoring is all about. And incidentally, even though they don't have air-bags, they are still reasonably safe.
Replica

Sorry but it has been rated most unsafe car and most unreliable and powerless made. Consumer reports says it is one of the auto industrys worst blunders. I sell Toyota and had at least 10 less then 1 year old beetles traded in for these reasons even though they lost up to 10,000 on trade.

Are 2009 Volkswagen Jettas reliable?

I'm thinking about buying a new 09 Jetta after I graduate college, but I've been hearing many horror stories about VW reliability. I wanted to know what people who currently own an 09 or 08 Jetta have to say about its reliability.

they are very good and well built cars.very comparable to toyota and honda

I own a 2002 Jetta TDI, and I bought my son a 2004 Jetta TDI, and my son-in-law bought a 2003 Jetta TDI, and a co-worker of mine bought a 2000 Jetta TDI after he saw how excellent my 1981 VW Rabbit diesel 5-speed worked. Now, obviously that does not include the model years you're talking about, but I will tell you that if I needed a replacement for my '02 Jetta TDI now, I would, without a second thought, buy a 2009 Jetta TDI. The VW diesel has an incredibly good track record, and the TDI (turbo diesel) is only better than the past diesels, so, you might want to consider spending a bit more for the TDI for incredibly great gas mileage and longevity. But, if you do so choose, please remember that even though the TDI is a turbo-charged diesel, it is STILL A DIESEL, so, the more you drive it like a diesel, the better your results will be. I might add, however, that since VW owns Audi, the TDI has also been put in the Audis, and they are winning and placing very high in international auto races, so, even thought they are diesels, they're blowing the doors off the gasoline powered cars too. But, do remember, I'm talking about diesel powered Jettas and not gasoline powered ones, with which I have no experience. God Bless you.

Volkswagens have always typically been reliable. Unfortuneately the mid 90's and early 2000's weren't good to VW. The automatic Transmisions always had problems, and the brake-light switch typically went out on many mk4 models. From late 2005 VW has a very good product yet again! VW air-cooled beetles will run forever if taken care of. All in all, any 2009 car you buy may develop some kind of problem, but when you go online to Lemon sites that show you how many recalls all auto manufacturers have, VW has some of the least, espacially compared to companies like GM and Kia.

i just bought my 09 jetta se two weeks ago and i love it :)

I am at a loss as to where these so-called 'horror stories' originate.
I own a 2006 GTI which has 40K+ reliable miles on it.
My son has a 2008 Rabbit [Jetta without a trunk] with 15K+ durable miles.
My wife loves her silver 2005 Jetta with 90K+ bullet-proof miles. The '05 Jetta of course has been updated a bit in '09, but basically remains the same. All the above are gasoline engines btw.
My family drives VWs for their knock-down absolutely-refuses-to-break reliabiliy. However, other manufactures can and do provide the same. What differentiates VWs from the common herd is their emotional appeal coupled with stunning performance that stands out in today's humdrum world.
Furthermore, the VW GTI won Car of the Year in Automobile magazine. The staff loved the GTIs screaming turbo and road-hugging ability so much they bought one to 'try out' for a year. By their own admission, it was flogged and whipped unmercifully by editors the entire year. At year's end they still loved it and reported absolutely NO problems!!
So, whether you prefer the quiet stormers [Jettas, Rabbits,Tiguans] or the frenetic buzz-saw wail of a performance turbo [GLI,GTI], VW is our family's only choice.

Is the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 1.8T timing chain or timing belt?

Asked by: J-Blaze @ 2009-04-12 08:05:37

I think its a timing belt but i dont know im not tha good with Jettas
devansteyn

It has a timing belt that drives the mechanical water pump as well.
James

Belt would be my first guess. Chains are noisy and for the length required would stretch all to H.
Best answer usually the simplest

They still drive the water pump with the timing belt. The assholes.
doane_nut

Timing belt for sure.

does the New Beetle still get a response?

I want to buy a 2000 New Beetle and I'm just curious, do they still get a reaction from people when you see them on the road or on the highway?
Even if its bad like "I hate those cars", hey, thats something. I'm just wondering if they've become too....blah or tired; something you wouldnt give a second look to, like your ordinary Toyota (no offense to those owners, I like them fine, too).
EDIT: I know they got a lot of attention in 1998 and for the next two years. I was hoping some of that same inspiration is still alive.

they still get lotsa looks...especially if u doll it up to look like no one elses...one idea i thought of when i had mine was from a pic i saw in a modeler magazine of a new beetle with a solid stripe down the center, a roof rack, wide whites and baby moon style hubcaps that looked like theold beetle hubcaps, thus making it look like a retro 60's beetle...

there r thousands of ideas only limited by ur imagination...

the bottom line is 25 silver beetles in a town of 10,000 don't really get everyones attention when they drive by, but that one that looks different than all the others, like the powder blue one that they made VERY few of gets more attention.

good luck and GOD bless.
junkyarddogfan

Can't speak for all Beetles, but mine still gets 2nd looks. Its cyber metallic green with a black hood cover and custom wheels.
Keep it clean and waxed; most important, keep a semi-shine on the tires too.
Have 90K reliable miles on mine!
Oh BTW, I still haven't gotten a reaction from 'the Law' ,but thats a good thing as I enjoy driving fast.....
fenton

I think they will always get more attention than most cars. I always look when I see one but then I'm a VW fan. I have a 64 Beetle and I pulled into the bank next to a new Beetle the other day. I think the bank employees enjoyed the sight.
Angel70

Regardless of what new owners say, no they do not get much attention now days. So much so that we will probably see a change in shape in 2010. Now those may get some attention initially.

Check out this site - incidentally it is a bad time to buy a new car when the next model which is completely different is about to be released.

What color should I get for a VW Convertible Beetle? (additonal Q in details.)?

I really want a convertible beetle, and I'm sure I'm going to get soon as my first car. I was wondering what color would be best for me to get?

Facts:
- I'm going to be 16 1/2 when I get my car
- I'm brunette
- I want a unique color (not black, white, etc.)
- I want the top to somehow match the exterior color (I don't really like it when its red and the top is beige)

Also, is it safe to drive with the top down on the freeway? It's not like I'm going to drive there everyday, but I'd just like to know.

Thanks! :)

Typical choice for a chick's first car...you'll see why I don't like New Beetles a few weeks after you've driven it. They're horrible cars. Buuuut anyway, first off your hair colour is not really a criteria for choosing your car's colour. Secondly, the best top colour that's going to look good no matter what body colour you get is black.

http://www.vw.com/vwfeatures/newbeetle/en/us/

Here you can choose your own colour for the New Beetle. It's not convertible but that doesn't matter.
Murcie_LP640

Unique color - go for a 'color concept' - they are limited series of 1,500-2,000 cars in special colors.
Tops come in either black or beige, except for this one "Flint" edition ( http://newbeetle.org/forums/photos-new-beetles/18986-newbeeloo-2007-black-red-leather-1-9-tdi-nbc.html )that had a red top, grey paint, and red leater interior.
Driving it is very safe because it's a modern convetible. It has rollover protection in the form of metal bars behind the headrests that pop up and protect you in case of rollover.
Here's a place where you can look at pictures of other people's New Beetles, research the car, and get some knowledgeable advice from friendly people who have experience with them:

ladybugewa

Typically,as a male, I'm not good at colors [my wife helps with that],but as for your safety ? I do know the VW has rollover protection on a par with Porsche,BMW, Audi, etc.
Also my wife drove her New Beetle [a cyber metallic green color scheme] for 90,000 happy and super-reliable miles. She recently bought a new silver Jetta.
She knows you will love your bug!
fenton

Pale yellow, baby blue or that cream color are beautiful.
Your way lucky to get that as your first car!
