Help me name my new VW Beetle?

Help me name my new VW Beetle?

I need your help naming my new VW Beetle. I need to give it an identity. The color is platinum grey. My daughter has been calling it Fritz, but it is not sticking. And my sister thinks that girl names are just out of the question, as a grey cars just aren't feminine enough. Other names that we have been throwing around include Vin, and Gandolf. Please give me a suggestion. Thanks in advance for your help.

So grey isn't feminine enough? Not even for the most feminine car that you can buy today?

If you give it a man's name everyone will think your car is a lesbian.
Matt Pearce

call it sammy or billy :)
ziggy

Please dont call it hubie like the other person suggested. And not the 67 either. If they are think of "HERBIE" that number would be a 53!

The car will name itself. Clearly it doesn't like Fritz. Vin... If it's a Diesel I'm going to have to go hurl. My five year old suggests Bertie. Like I said, the car will let you know its name eventually.

How about Ringo. After all, it is a Beetle.

Is there something on the number plate. We call ours by the last 3 letters.

Gustav, seems fitting for a european car if you like it. Otherwise stick with Fritz.

I would say buy a 2000 or up Jetta or GTI i have a 2001 jetta gli with 115000 and no problems but make sure that if you buy one that is a 2000 and up and has over 80,000 miles that it had its timing belt replaced and if so you will not have any problems for a long long time. My vw is modded but i have had no problems it will for sure be running well after 250,000 miles vw are the best way to go..... also the older vws are awsome too because i also have a mk2 gti that is a show car and i love both of my dubs.... check out the website vwvortex.com its a forum and thats where i found my 01 jetta

You can't be poor if you are planning to buy a VW. They are collector items (unless you get a Rabbit or early Jetta) They have electrical problems so only the "Fonz" has the technical touch to make them run>Wham bam; thank you ma'am. Thieves won't even steal it. But, if you can work your way through the wiring problems it is a decent goer. I would even try a Fox(I hear than less people want those. Hey, but wheels are wheels. Or an old air cooled station wagen. You can sleep inside it which is always an advantage at a bush party.
The best answer is

It depends on how much you're willing to spend and what you can live with. One of my jobs is consulting on automotive transport: (no, I don't take clients from Yahoo) and helping people figure out what they ought to purchase.

A 2003 up base Jetta or Golf is probably the best choice amoung VW's, they are fairly cheap to buy, have most of the safety equipment you'd need (side and curtain air bags, ABS, power windows, locks, most have cd players and keyless entry and factory alarm systems) and the base 115 BHP 2.0 liter non-turbo four cylinder runs on regular gasolene and can use cheaper regular oil for service, you should also get only a manual transmission....

The big knocks on the 2.0 liter NON turbo 4 is that it uses a lot of oil (has high oil consumption...) use of a quart of oil every 1000 to 1500 miles is about normal for this motor; the other knock is that it has a lack of power and only so-so milage given the limited performance...

However, from my dealership experience, I've seen far less trouble with this motor (assuming that you check the oil regularly and add as needed) vs the other motors that VW uses (especially the turbo). With a standard shift transmission, it may not be "lively" but it will be able to keep up with city traffic without any problem; high speed passing would be another story, however.

Avoid the automatic transmission. VW has a fair amount of problems with automatic transmissions all the back to the late sixties and its only been the last couple of years that the problem seems to have gotten better. Change to Aisin-Warner designed and built automatic transmissions in some models and re-designed ZF-VW transmissions in other models seems to show promise; but, only the future will tell for sure how these units will be.

If the generation of 2003-2005 is too expensive for you; then the generation of 1994-1998, Golfs and Jetta's with the base engine would be the next choice. Again, as with any VW before 2005/6. avoid the automatic transmission... the base models with standard transmissions will be the best bet. Cheap to buy, cheap to run, easy to repair; most of base models don't have power windows, locks, cruise control, ABS, automatic climate control etc... Almost everything is manually operated, but that means less to go wrong. Parts are cheaper too, more easily found and lots of vehicles in breaker (salvage) yards to get cheap used parts.

Of course, safety is less: no ABS, side or curtain air bags either..
Just use common sense when driving and hopefully, you'll never miss those items.

Finally, it might be good to consider a different make of vehicle. Honda Civics, Toyota Corolla, Mazda Protege/3, even late model Ford Focus (2004 and up) are also good choices too. The Civic, Corolla and Mazda are among the most trouble free cars in their class: the later Ford Focus is cheap to buy and after 2003 has had good reliability. The Mazda and Focus are driver's cars, the Corolla has the cushy ride, the Civic somewhere between the two. Always get a car with ABS, side/curtain air bags (optional on most years of Focus and Mazda) and all the cars are best with a standard shift transmission.

Well, I hope this helps, a car nut.

Are VW Jettas a good first car?

I saw one that I am in love with. It is a TDI.
Here it is:http://www.autoshopper.com/used-cars/2002_Volkswagen_Jetta_GLS_Lakewood_NJ-2926066.htm

[Best Answer]Yes, that is why most Jetta drivers are young or first time drivers.

TDI means Turbo Diesel.
The TDI Jetta gets 40mpg city and 44mpg highway. Better than all gas powered cars.

Yes it is a very good first car, TDI does very good on gas. Insurance shouldn't be too high, its a FWD. Just be careful German cars have electrical problems, and the price is a bargain.

and 170k?

i dont think 170k on any car is a good first car
Nick

Not to throw water on your first love, unless you have a complete service history on the vehicle from day one, I'd pass. The TDI is a pretty decent auto, but service and parts are expensive for it.

Now its true that the TDI can live a long life, but at 170,000 miles its own the down side of its lifetime. And, I'd remind you that things besides the engine wear out over that time and milage. Suspension parts get "soft", rubber parts wear, steering gets looser, seats begin to sag, etc...etc...

If you still are considering the auto after this, have it completely checked out by a VW specialist, does not have to be a dealership; just somebody who works on VW's day in and day out. That person would understand the quirks that the vehicle has.

Diesel fuel in most parts of the country is far more expensive than gasolene is; the savings that you might gain from more milage, could be eaten up by the difference in service costs and fuel. If you like the Jetta, how about a gasolene engined one; same driving experience, lower purchase price and you'd get a newer model for same money you'd be spending on this one. Stupid question, perhaps, have you driven this vehicle yet?

Hope this helps, a car nut.

sounds like you should get a suspention upgrade...

take it to a mechanic dude
Cheer_up_son

First of all, unless your frame head was changed to a king pin suspension up front you cant have a 66 front beam. I believe (correct me if im wrong) 67 was the first year of the ball joint beam.
Here's what you can do
Get a used beam that rides right. kind of a lot of work but easy work. 4 bolts to disconnect the the beam, two break lines, and the steering shaft.

Get new leaf springs in your own beam. but you would have to do the above plus pull apart the beam.

This might work and would be REALLY easy. Get those coil over
shocks for like $80 and put those on the front.
Good Luck
ps have you checked for beam adjusters?
Fo-Ville

Depending on how its answered either get raised spindles (stock maybe). If not then do what other dude said about ball joints.

I just bought a 4 year old Vw 2.0 GT TDI Golf?

When cleaning my car today of 6 weeks old i bought from the dealers, its a 4 year old car, but i had it 6 weeks, its got paint bubbles on the rear door sill, i have warranty for 3 months, but they said at vw, that they are not sure its covered, and need to send a report to vw head office, they said looks like the paint isnt matching paint should be 180 and one part was showing 180 and another 160 with the meter thing, anyway looks like its had a paint job on the sill at some point, but vw said it wasnt done by them, previous owner musta had a bump and the paint job was crap, so now the paint bubbles are starting, wonder legally where i could stand, if they refuse to sort this.
They say 24 hrs b4 head office get back to them about what can be done, im a bit angry this car cost me 9 thousand.
Its bubbles coming threw the paint on the sill, as u open the door, the sill u step over to get in, its a crappy paint job.
Bubbles just appeared on it, did ring the dealer today, and went to the paint shop with it, they will get back in touch with me 2morrow reports been sent and pics to VW, im gutted, shes a gorgeous car, loads of extra's clean looking, sunroof heated seats, reversing sensors etc, now im really pissed off, i only got it 6 weeks ago, from a VW garage, good mind to stop my finance, and tell them to take it back, and thats that, dont want to put any more money out on herm really gutted, tiny little paint bubbles popping out all over the sill.

At the bottom of all outside sills there is a stippling effect
on the sill are you sure its not part of the car, try to compare it to other cars, if it needs to be sorted but they wont you can get an independant accessor top look at the car
scarbouro

Warranty will not cover this. If the previous owner got in some sort of fender bender, and tried to cover it up, or even if they painted it themselves. This is a claim that will either have to be paid by you, or insurance. The bubbles in the paint is most likely due to the base of the car not being prepared right for paint. When the car is fresh from the plant it goes through a paint scanner to see that the paint is correct and evenly layed out all over the car. thus you getting the code 180(factory paint) the 160(after market) is from another paint job.
ryanram5551

It sounds like it got hit and the paint was put on over filler that wasn't completely cured. You'd have to sand it off and repaint. No warranty though.

Good Car.

Ring the dealer and see what they have to say.
