can i put red dye diesel in my jetta 2010 tdi cup edition?

Question 1
can i put red dye diesel in my jetta 2010 tdi cup edition?...  i just purchased a 2010 vw jetta tdi cup edtion and i know i have to use diesel #2 but i was wondering whats the difference with #2 and red dye diesel? and is it possible to use red dye diesel for my car and it not being harmed?

Answers
1)   Yeah you can my Unclue nicked a about 400 liters of red disel and his car works fine so go for it mate - Corey Curbishley

2)   It's still diesel, just a tax-reduced version.

Be careful- spot checks happen and the fines are huge (the government doesn't like getting ripped off). It's illegal to use dyed fuel in a passenger car. - Scott

3)   Just like Scott said its for a different tax charge. It's the same stuff as you buy at the pump just with a red dye. It's usually used by farmer's and heavy equipment for construction. I've heard a lot of people say that red diesel will give you more power for your engine, but it just isn't true. It's also true what Scott said about not getting caught with it in you car by the cops. I guess it can be a big fine. - Mike

4)   Car will run fine but know that, if busted, you're looking at (in WV at least) a $17,000 fine. The fines vary by state, but $1,000 per gallon of tank capacity seems to be the norm.

Just think, how long will it take that 75 cent per gallon saving to pay off a $17,000 fine?

And I would be the first of many people to turn you in the second I saw you pumping off-road into a car licensed for the road. If I'm going to pay my taxes, you are too. - Richard R

5)   Hey Jose,
I'm with Richard on this one.. Don't do it! - Jim

6)   Jeezus, violate the law, the warranty to save a few bucks. ULTRA-LOW SULFUR, is what the MANUAL SAYS!!! DO IT! Besides, you get superior gas mileage, CHEAP A***!! - djaca70

Question 2
Can you use mobil1 0W-40 oil on a 1.4 2000 volkswagen golf?...  If not what is the best recommended? Cheers

Answers
1)   you can use it,,,im a fan of castrol products but any "name brand" is good,,I know some will say this one or that is better but all meet the same standards..if you had a engine with flat tappet cam you might want oil with more zinc but you dont.., u may wish to use a "high mileage" type which has agents to help old valve seals and other soft parts.. - pedro7of9

2)   Mobil 1 0-40W is perfect for that car, it is one of few oils that meets VW's 505.01 or 502.000 requirements. Most oils do not meet VW's standard. - pbleek

3)   If your engine has a substantial number of miles on it a synthetic oil may not be the best choice, especially if the engine has not been serviced with synthetic oil from the beginning. There are plenty of oils on the market that would be better. A high mileage formulation, as one responder alluded to, might be a smarter option. - Arthur O

4)   You could but unless you live above the artic circle- why?

5W-30 Mobile 1 is just fine for all but artic circumstances.

BTW there is no more warranty to worry about on an 11 year old car. Hope it doesn't leak oil now as it will be worse on synthetic.

Question 3
How to get a code for check engine light for VW?...  I recently bought a 99 VW beetle and while driving it last night, the check engine light came on. I am wondering if there is a key that I can put in somewhere so that I can get a code to see what may be wrong (like a Honda, I guess). I got gas a few days ago so I am not sure if the light would come on several days after if I didn't tighten the cap all the way. It is an orangish color and is not due for an oil change.
Thanks

1)   Go to any auto zone or advance auto parts, they will tell you for free and give you a print out. - KMcG

2)   if you go to a auto parts store such as oriellys, atuo zone, car quest or anything along those lines of a parts store most of them have a code reader to plug into the car to find out what the trouble code is that caused ur light to come one and it is a free service. if u got gas that was bad such as having some water in it that could cause the light to come on. - purcellj84

3)   Code for vw. P0411. Not sure what yours will be but the passat loves that code I know mine does. - Donnie Skelton

4)   fg - Mario H

is 170k miles on a 2000 passat to much?...  hello, i am currently looking to buy a car. i found this passat for $5,000 the only thing is that it has 170k miles on it. the timing belt was replaced two days ago, along with the brakes and etc. the paint is in good condition and basically looks brand new. but is 170k miles to much for the vehicle. i have owned honda's, hyundai's, and mazda's but have never really own a different type of car. so i wouldn't know. i do know that this passat has the same engine as an audi.

Answers
1)   Go to Edmunds.com and look up some information on the Passat. They have a very poor reputation for reliability. I personally wouldn't buy any car with 170K, but that's my opinion. - bmy

2)   If it's a diesel that's been well maintained that's nothing to worry about mines has 160000 on 2002 plate still drives like new. If it's petrol I wouldn't bother. - steven

3)   I just got my passat it has 80,000 miles on it. Year is 2000 old lady had it looks brand new.but the miles on yours is high.just have it checked out real good before you get it.Hope this helps you out. - Donnie Skelton

4)   unless youre ready to fix a euro car like this when it breaks i wouldnt suggest it. vw's audis, volvos are a huge waste of money. they are unappealing and expensive stick with the hondas and hyundais if you want to have extra cash. unless of course youre loaded. - generon
