Is it true that VW Jetta's are difficult and expensive to maintain due to foreign parts?...

1)   Hell no. I love my Jetta. Most reliable car i've ever had, and its a '98. - EETXFUK

2)   It is a foreign car, it is supposed to have foreign parts, it it didn't then it wouldn't be foreign would it?

3)   My 2007 VW Rabbit is very similar, many shared parts with the Jetta. And yes it is expensive. Most parts must be ordered through your dealer, which is very pricey. I tried to buy my rear wiper blade (a 6" piece of rubber) at Autozone, but they don't carry many VW parts (neither does Advanced or O'Reilley's). So I had to buy it at the dealer... FOR $29!! They're about $7 for a blade on a chevy that's twice as long at Autozone.

Repairs almost always require parts shipped from Germany, which is pricey. And my Rabbit has had innumerable problems, despite being relatively new and very well taken care of.

So yes, parts and labor are expensive on VW's, and they are ONE OF THE MOST UNRELIABLE BRANDS IN AMERICA.

My VW is a total POS. It's a great car, fun to drive and lots of features, but it's alway in the shop (starting at 250 miles after purchase). Heck, My engine overheated and seized up at 4,000 miles.

I will always tell people to avoid VW. Everyone I have talked to has been unsatisfied with theirs also, so I didn't just get a lemon. German brands in general, especially VW, are highly overrated with reliability.

I would recommend a different car. They're overpriced anyway - Jake

4)   i love my 2004 vw jetta 1.8t ... buuut, a major tune-up ran me $590 @ the dealership (some dealers wanted $790)..my local vw/audi repair shop (very, very good fyi) wanted $540. ive only had minor issues w/it im the orig owner (purch w/10miles) & maintanence has ran me if i spread it over the 6yrs about $850/year. In terms of difficulty to maintain, no more than any other car. Brakes, tune-ups, sensors, etc..the positive is its a sturdy car compared to a honda or a focus. but note, i havent had anything done to this car that didnt start @ $500 & ive only had (2) major tune-ups n im still running fine (they recommended @ least 6 major/minor by now) and a lot of the parts near the engine are plastic--which i think is stupid bc duh! the engine is HOT. Also, ive never had to wait for parts to come in for lngr than a day, and you do have to take it to some1 who knows euro cars...but thats like any car. would u take your mustang to some1 who specializes in hondas & toyotas? - jjohnson94107

how many turns to tighten the bolts on a volkswagon fox valve cover?...  how many turns to tighten the bolts on a Volkswagen fox valve cover i replaced the gasket and need to know how many turns to snug the bolts. i replaced the gasket before but tighten the bolts to much and ruined the gasket. i need to know how many turns to turn the bolts on the valve cover so i don't destroy the new gasket.
its the 1989 Volkswagen fox GL with the 1.8

1)   its not about turns its about how much pounds of pressure you use...you need a torque wrench but just tighten till it feels tight not too much not too little - sparkscarz4

2)   Before putting on the new gasket check that the mating surface of the valve cover is perfectly flat. If you tightened it enough that you ruined the previous gasket you might have dimpled the cover so that it won't seal correctly. You might need to hammer it flat. As far as tightening the new one it's more a matter of torque than how many turns. 80 inch pounds (7 ft-pounds) is a typical number. I'm not sure about the exact number for your car. As a guess, assuming the threads are clean, snug them finger tight then about 1/2 turn. - Howard L

Thinking about buying a car, is this Jetta worth it.?...  I'm looking to buy a car, i've been looking into this 2001 Jetta with 162k miles on it,5 speed, stick, 1.8 turbo, the guy is asking 2400 how much should i offer him and is this even a good buy since this car has about 2 more years worth of miles on it. How long do jettas normally last in terms of miles

1)   Buying a foreign car while living in the USA is never worth it. - Christy

2)   i own an '04 jetta 1.8t triptonic.. so first things 1st..this car shld have 135k (but u knew that) 2nd, being a jetta owner w/the 1.8t ur about to have electronic engine probs (its that time), 3rd the 2ndary air pump is prob about 2 go, they go about every 48-50k w/the 1.8's, the catalytic converter is prob next. And remembering that repairs start around $600 I'd counter with 2k (but i prob wldnt but it.) If you really, really like it, take it to a vw dealership & pay the $100 for a full vehicle inspection. One thing about jetta's is they can have a lot of issues that are only recognizable by an expert euro mechanic (not saying the dealers r alwys the best--they arent in sf) and the 1.8's r testy bc ur pushing a lot of power through 4cyl. im not certain how long these engines last, i'd guess 130k but im certain the electronic system wld fail b4 the engine does & everything on this car even the drs & trunk r operated & recognized through the electronic system... but i know acuras last 200k & thats the lngst known in the industry (i ran my 90 acura 240k b4 it died on me)

(AND YES OWNING A FOREIGN CAR IN AMERICA IS WORTH IT esp bc i was replacing my crap '00 CHEVY CAMARO that cost me more in 4yrs of repairs than my jetta has in 6. let alone gas..stupid car--yes, im bitter) - jjohnson94107

67 vw bug engine swap to a 1971 vw bug, will it fit?...

1)   Yes it will, even if it is a 1500cc and the one in the 71 was a 1600cc
motor. The 67 has a generator and the 71 has a alternator, this will
require some modification in your wiring or you can use the alt and
stand from the 71 and install it on the 67 motor. The release bearing
in a 67 is different than the one in the 71 and will require a correct
matching pressure plate to release the clutch correctly. etc.. - Pat
