Is the '66 VW bug with a 1600 engine worth buying?

Is the '66 VW bug with a 1600 engine worth buying?

I used to have a '64 bug and enjoyed it. I could do all the maintenance then. I have found a '66 with a 1600 engine. I'm not familiar with this engine. What is the horse power and what kind of mileage would it get driving normally? Is $1,500 a good price for one that runs and is a Calif. vehicle?

YES, YES AND MORE OF YES! GET THAT CAR! GREAT DEAL ALL THE WAY AROUND! i'M JEALOUS.
To love is to live

The motor is much the same as the 64 just a bit larger. The 1600 had about 86hp. That is a very good price.
uthockey32

engines are very much alike but yeah.. for a running 66 thats a steal.. if i had 1500 then id buy it but. wont get a much better deal than that. but check last time it was registered

That's an aftermarket engine. You don't know what that engine is in any way. It could be anything. I'd say buy it and install an OEM engine.
Prime

The best factory 1600 had 65 hp. They were very reliable and would make that 66 go good. I've seen the rebuilds for that motor go for $2200 and up. Nice classic look with later version power for less than the motor is worth.

How to get the bugs off my car...?

I have used coke, and fabric softener and it does not work does anyone have any suggestions?

well you could always grab about 8 or 10 dollars and head to the car wash. that's what i would do. and if that doesn't work, then grab some car washing supplies and a bucket of soapy water and scrub the car wherever the bugs are. good luck!
soupshoe

Take a bath towel. Dunk it in the sink in hot water. Ring it out and lay it on the bugs for 10 min or so. This will soften the bugs and they wash right off. Repeat if very heavy accumulation of bugs...........md
Uncle Jed

get some greased lightning and spray it on in the shade and let it soak for 5 minutes then wash your car.

Your not going to belive this but spit is a phenomenal bug remover. Better to use the hot wet towel first.

I want a VW Beetle, but I need to convince my parents they are good cars.?

The college I want to go to is 5 hours away, and I'll be wanting to travel home every now and then. Help me out?
I found a few decent looking used Beetles on Craig's List. I'd obviously ask to allow my mechanic to check it out first, but...

New beetle, or old?

The new beetle is expensive, but it is a very reliable car. Good safety rating too.

The old beetle is cheap, reliable, easy and cheap to fix.

VW beetles have good millage= less gas money.

They also have low emissions= you are environmentally responsible

Its easy to drive, my best friend in high school had one and he loved it. You can fit more than you think inside, 2 friends in the back.
They are also very inexpensive.

After this you just need to convince them you are responsible enough to drive it 5 hours by yourself and own a car.

Good luck at college!

My wife and I had a 1999 New Beetle. It was great on MPG and of course we loved the shape and color (Cyber Green).
We live in NC and drove this wonderful car all up and down the east coast from beach to mountains. It never let us down.
After 90K reliable miles we needed a 4-door car and bought a Jetta to replace the trusty Beetle.
Now every time my wife sees a Beetle she misses ours. (If VW ever builds a 4-door Beetle, we will be 1st in line.......)

tell your parents that they are the top selling car in the world and they are very safe secure and most reliable plus have incredible gas milage

Lie to them and say maintenance is cheap and easy, and repairs are few and far between. Or, get a Honda instead, then you don't have to lie.

it should look like an orange thing sticking out toward the bottom of the engine.
Paul Bump

A replaceable oil filter cartridge element is on the lower side of the engine!!
amin

Access to the oil filter is from the bottom of the engine (looking up, of course).
You must 1st remove the bottom airflow tray. There are abt. 6 torx screws . This requires a special screwdriver. Most car manufacturers are going to these screws, I guess so we have to take it to their dealerships. Which isnt a bad thing, BTW.
In the past , I changed my own oil/filter. Now I take it to my local VW dealership. For just a few $$ , I'm in and out quickly. They do a top-notch job and guarantee the work.
And I dont get oily, sweaty any more.

WHERE ON THE NET CAN I BUY AN AFTERMARKET CLUTCH KIT FOR A 05 VW TOUAREG 2.5 TDI?

Ebay

why not try a parts store would be cheap as an dwouldnt have to pay shipping but if you type into searchbox

05 VW TOUAREG parts
05 VW TOUAREG clutch parts
should find a place that sells them which wil be most parts stores
kelly_f_1999

You most likely will not find that on the net. It could be that it is only available from VW as this is a low volume sale car and may be below the level where it is profitable for companies to make them.
You are going to be better off talking to places like Partco or similar motor factors which you will find on yell.com
Timbo is here

Do a search here for what you are looking for:

You should find some cheap options.

my 1980 T25 stinks (and i mean stinks) of petrol, even more than normal. what could it be?

it still has the customary oil leak, but the petrol smell has gotten much worse.

Get it checked by a garage. A petrol pipe might be loose or split.

Thus is dangerous and could lead to a fire.
Robert D

what do you think? get it to a garage before it explodes
O

I had a very similar problem with an 84 watercooled T25 Transporter I owned some years ago. It stunk of petrol inside to the point of having to drive with the windows down. There was no sign of leakage outside, it was the rubber breather pipes on the tank. You'll probably find they have perished with age. Providing there is no visible signs of serious leaks I would be confident you will cure the problem by replacing all the breather pipes. Good luck, Gizz.
Gizzard Puke

change all your fuel pipes immediatly, also the tanks corrode from the top so check that, it is easy to remove

Removing & replacing a car windscreen correctly?

Does anyone have experience in the following as I need to remove the windscreen from a MK3 VW Golf.

Apparently I've been advised they are bonded to the car, what ever that means ?

I presume there are no outer rubber seals on these windscreens unlike the older cars, where a rubber seal was present all around the glass.

What is the correct way to do it, do I need any special tools to take it out ?

There is a large crack across the windscreen thats why it has to come out.

I was thinking maybe just smash it out from the inside out & clean up the edges of the bodywork, ready for the replacement to go in.

I've seen windscreen bond on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WINDSCREEN-BOND-GLUE-SCREENFIX-FREE-P-P_W0QQitemZ220426965360QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint?hash=item3352789170&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1683%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

Thats if this stuff will work as it should ?

Then there is the question of preparing the replacement windscreen prior to fitting & actually fitting it correctly so it stays safely on the car.

If there are any weblink instructions on any forum sites let me know.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't done it but I know it requires at least one special tool. I friend has a small machine shop and was making the special chisel device glass installers use to cut the old glass from the bond. However, the link below shows a bunch of tools at affordable prices that could probably do the job.
Goo luck with finding the instructions - they must be out there somewhere.
Michael

This is all too much for a simple chap like me. I'd go to the nearest garage and say "fix it".
Riflebunny

My guess is that if it is glued on(bonded means glued) then you would need 2 people. One to heat up the glass at the sealing edge with a blow hair dryer on high in the sun so that the glue softens and the other guy pushes on the glass with his feet(runners on) not to break the glass but to see if it will lift off. The sealing agent I am suspecting is like that of tar. May take quite a bit of heating on the entire edge. glass is not flexible so you just may be able to lift it a hair, enough to put a piece of paper between the glass and the tar for when you let off the pressure with your feet to push on another area that you have to heat up the same way.
anybody grunt can use a hammer. But can you get it out in one chunk? You learn something useful.
