74 vw beetle alternator problems?

Question 1
74 vw beetle alternator problems?...  I have a 74 beetle that I have put two new (re manufactured) alternators and a regulator on it. The alternator still is only putting out 12.50 volts and when I disconnect the battery terminal it dies. Do you think i got another bad alternator or is something else going on??

Answers
1)   Your alternators aren't pitting out any voltage. That's just the battery voltage you're measuring.
You're probably not getting 12 volts to the exciter lead on the alternator. I'm not sure about 74s, but some Beetles got that voltage from the idiot light circuit. If the light burnt out, the alternator didn't run. - Nomadd

2)   It's AMAZING Is this what you are looking for? http://styleasy.info/416839/battery-terminal - kozusko jans

3)   What about the regulator? It is what determines your output voltage. If it is the old-style mechanical , it will need to be adjusted.

Never disconnect either battery terminal when the engine is running. This will cause the alternator to turn full on, ruining the alternator and possibly blowing out light bulbs and electronic stuff. - Kirk

4)   Kirk is right.
Never take the battery terminal off a running car, or the alternator will quickly fry.
The only other thing I can think of worth mentioning is that if the dash light for the alternator is burned out, then the alternator will not work, because the alternator rotor gets its current to become magnetized, though this bulb. Generators have permanent magnets, but alternators don't, so need input current in order to produce output that is greater than the input.

Have the alternators and regulators tested outside the car. Most places like Autozone do this for free. Have the new one tested before installation if you are not sure. - Motorhead

5)   Check all connections to the battery. The grounds to the engine/chasis and all the power ones too.

Yours sounds like a bad main ground.

Question 2
Is it possible to convert a 1965 VW Beetle to an automatic transmission?...  I have a 1965 VW Beetle and I want to convert the transmission. Is this possible? And how much will that run me?

Answers
1)   It's difficult to obtain the automatics that were used in these vehicles, much less all the related parts. The automatics weren't a true automatic, you still had to shift the gears, they just had an automatic clutch, so they were never popular. There weren't even offered until 1968, and were dropped in '76. You'd really have to find a complete parts car, and see if you could make it work with the older model. Realistically it would cost more than the car is worth. - D

2)   VW used a semi-automatic transmission in some Beetles (from 1968-1976). I'd assume that if you can find one of those semi-auto transaxles, you could swap it in place of the manual and have it fit etc. Fitting a more conventional automatic transmission to the rear-engined Beetle might be more of a challenge, but I bet somebody has done it before...ask around at any VW Beetle clubs etc., you can find.

Fwiw the VW semiauto trans had to be shifted manually (via the shift lever which also actuated a vacuum operated clutch) but you don't use a clutch pedal. The transmission has a torque converter like a conventional automatic so you can take off from a stop without using a clutch pedal as well. It's automatic (clutch pedal free) but must be shifted from gear to gear by the driver. - Ben Linus

3)   There is the auto-stick shift that is clutchless.
It could easily be put in if you could find one.
They were started in 68, and not many made.

There is also the type III full automatic transmission that will easily fit the engine and mounts.
The problem is the drive axles.
The 65 had swing arms with solid axles.
The auto type III had independent rear suspension with drive shafts with flexible double universal CV joints. You would have to change the rear suspension to IRS for the axles to work.

I would suspect it would run around $1000. - Motorhead

4)   check out www.cbperformance.com or pasificcustoms.com for a automatic conversion kit for your bug, - KAM

What sensors can you clean in a jetta 1.8t?...  I have a 2002 vw jetta 1.8 turbo
I just cleaned the IAT and now I'm working on the MAF.
I was wondering if there was any other easy sensors you can clean like maybe for the turbo or something?
If not what else is there that's cheap if not free to check on.
Thanks

Answers
1)   Run a can of Sea Foam through the intake. You would be amazed how much carbon will be removed. Leave the rest of the sensors alone. They are happy the way they are. - djaca70

2)   You did the ones that need it most often.
The O2 sensor could be done, but only if there is lots of carbon accumulation.
To avoid needing to do the IAT and MAF in the future, you could splice long tubing and metal condenser into the PCV hose, so that oil and water foam never gets up there.
In cold weather there is just too much condensation the way the system was designed.
If you can cool and condense it before it gets there, you will never have trouble with these sensor again. - Motorhead

3)   Be careful cleaning the MAF. you can very easily damage it. - Louis G

Old VW Beetle as an everyday car?...  So lets say you were looking for a first car and you came across a 78 VW beetle. In was in good condition and was about £1000. It's near to where you live, there's no rust on it, why not go for it?
See this is what I ask myself when i see a car like that. I would love an old beetle, but im worried that if i got one, the first winter it saw, it would rust out and die. Surely though, if i kept it in good running order (which if you knew me personally, you know i would.) And put a cover over it at night (on my driveway) it would be ok to use as an everyday car?
I can't stress enough, i am very proud of the cars that my family have owned over the years. The first sign of rust it would be straight to the body shop. .
Ok, if not a beetle, what about a Morris Minor 1000 or Ford Escort MK1 or MK2?

Answers
1)   I use a 76 camper as my daily runner. just keep the oil topped up.

For more info google VZI, biggest vw forums in europe. there's loads of tips on there. - M1

2)   They are under powered, poor braking and bad handling unsafe cars. The snow on top of the car will not cause the rust, it is the snow that gets packed under the car that will rust it. There is a reason there are not a lot of these cars left. I would suggest something else if you want a daily driver - jim s

3)   As an ex 3 time Beetle owner back in the days when they were current models i would not touch one with a bargepole today. Nostalgia is fine but common sense is better. By today's standards they are crude and basic in the extreme, the performance is woeful and the handling and braking the same. The only real safety measures are the seat belt. By today's standards they are not even economical. Even when they were being sold new they were an old design and they only sold the numbers they did as they were reputed to be the first real 100,000 mile car (when they came out the average car was getting distinctly 'tired' once it got past 65k.) but it was all a bit of a con really, they were only so long lasting and 'unburstable' because the engine was in such a low state of tune it was hard to abuse them. You would have to be a masochist to want one as a daily driver. - Fairdo4all

I am wanting to have my mk5 golf sprayed white, it is currently black....?

Question 1
I am wanting to have my mk5 golf sprayed white, it is currently black....?...  And i was wondering roughly how much a full respray will cost me ? and if anyone knows of a great place to go in the north Lanarkshire area ? Help much appreciated.

Answers
1)   Color change is expensive. I say do not do it. It is very hard to paint everything to make it look right. - jim s

2)   BIG JOB!!! JUst buy a white one..... - julie who

3)   Any paint shop will give you a price, but it will be eye watering. It will also devalue the car considerably. Although you may not care about that now it will hit you hard when you come to sell. - Bazza

4)   It would be way too much work and expensive on such a new car. Best would be to trade it in on a white one. - Chris

5)   Anything can be done at a price. The trouble is that the engine bay, inside the rear hatch and within the door frames all need to be done. It is very costly to do the job properly and when you come to try to sell, no amount of reassurance will convince some potential buyer that your car has not been in a bad smash etc. - L G

6)   Sell it and buy a white one. You might lose a few hundred quid doing that but that's nothing compared to the cost of getting a bodyshop to spray it a different colour.
You're looking at a grand for a cheapo job that will look crap and where you'll still see the original colour when you open the bonnet and doors, to nearer £3k for them to take the doors, bonnet, glass etc out the car and do it properly. - EvelynThe ModifiedDog.

Will changing the stereo in my 2010 VW Jetta void my warranty?...  I have a 2010 VW Jetta that is still under the bumper-to-bumper warranty. I want to get my stereo upgraded to the "Premium 8" satellite radio. (P/N: RCD-510) I also need to get the "shark fin" antenna installed too. Is this possible?
Will doing this (or having it done) void my warranty?

Answers
1)   No. The warranty is for engine, transmission, suspension, etc. - Dutch

2)   That should work fine. And if you are worried about the warranty, have the dealer install the units. This will ensure the warranty is good. - cjo84070

3)   cjo is right, because if you do it yourself, you have to reset the CAN-BUS, which can only be done with special tools. If I recall correctly, that 'shark fin' you mention, is only on Audis. - djaca70

4)   I believe you may find that the alarm system "routes through" the stereo system so a word with your dealer would not go amiss. - L G

5)   A couple of incorrect pieces of information have been stated here, just to specify...

A new car warranty can't be voided in it's entirety as the result of adding aftermarket parts or equipment. There is something called the Magnum-Moss Warranty Act that gives you specific rights in this arena. The basic idea is that if you change out something like the radio, and you have a problem with part of your ignition system, then as long as the dealer can't conclusively prove that you changing the radio caused the ignition component to fail, then they will have to honor warranty terms for that component.

Also, even if new parts are installed by an authorized VW dealer, they will not carry the new car warranty unless they were installed prior to delivery on your specific car. This clause pertains to situations like a VW dealership installing VW Driver Gear lowering springs or a premium radio like the RCD-510 or RNS-510. Unfortunately neither of these items will be covered by the original warranty on your car, or the warranty that previously covered the RNS-510 or RCD-510 if it was purchased pre-owned. New parts from VW are covered by a separate 12 month warranty.

Hopefully this information helps clear up those issues for you. As far as the installation goes, it is fairly straight forward. You will need to partially remove the headliner to install the wires going to the new sharkfin antenna. Additionally, you may need to perform some coding using a VAG-COM to make sure the the RCD-510 properly interacts with your MFD display and multifunction steering wheel, if applicable. - gti_4cefed4

replace floor boards on 1969 type 1 vw beetle?...  passenger back floor board gone do to battery leaking

Answers
1)   yes there are aftermarket companies that make many parts for those beetles, in fact it is still produced in mexico. But the vehicle does not meet govornment standards for the USA , however more likely than not, any parts you order are going to come from mexico. I did a partial restoration on a bug about 12 years ago, and all the parts came from mexico, my friends and I all had a good laught wondering why german car parts were made in mexico, but at the time, I did not know mexico produced the vw bugs still.
Check on the internet, or find a vw club near you and ask for some help, I am not sure who or what company is a good one to deal with anymore. You can also type 69 type 1 vw beetle parts? in your web search box and track down a parts supplier. Be careful when dealing with unknown businesses. Use a visa or mastercard so that if you get the wrong parts, even if they refuse to accept them back, mail them anyway on your own dime, and dispute the bill with the visa or mastercard co. and tell them you shipped the faulty parts back to the company and show them your reciept. Best of luck pay attention with who you are dealing with
I have only had a few problems, and I was able to dispute them succesfully by paying to send the parts back to the company that sold them. - roger

2)   There are so many places that sell floor pans for the Beetle, its phenomenal. This is a common problem as well. Go on thesamba.com, and search. - djaca70

3)   If you had said the front floor by the pedals, then I would have suggested one of the many replacement panels.
But under the battery is under the back seat, and is just flat sheet metal.
Just pop rivet a chunk of metal cut out of an old hood or trunk lid.
You don't even have to do any welding.
It won't matter at all.
You could seal it with some roofing tar from underneath, to prevent wind, water, or more rust. - Motorhead

What makes Volkswagen's TDI system different from any other turbo diesel system?...

Answers
1)   VW is not the only car with a TDI system, no matter what it is called.
But TDI is a great idea.
It is direct injection.
The older gasoline injection system used to spray into the intake manifold, because that was under very low pressure and it was easy to use weak fuel pressures and injectors to still get the job done.
But the problem was that then the fuel/air mixture was in the cylinder ahead of time, waiting on the spark. And with the extra compression of the turbo charger, it could ignite before the spark, simply from the heat of compression. That is why premium gas becomes necessary, and why turbo chargers were limited in how much boost and on what engines it could even be done. They had to reduce the compression ratio in order to stop pre-ignition.
But the highest compression possible is what gives you the most power.
So what they did was to switch over to the more expensive injection like a diesel, that injects right into the cylinders. That means it can be delayed until exactly when it is needed, and then can't cause pre-ignition. So you can run much higher compression ratios. Much more power. But the injectors and pumps have to be capable of dealing with the extreme pressures in the combustion chamber, so it is not as cheap of a system. - Motorhead

2)   The basic principles of it are not different than most others. It is a turbocharged direct injection diesel. Nice engine to drive and the fuel economy is great with the manual transmission, but there is nothing special or magical about it. Motorhea. has no clue as to what this is. It is a DIESEL! - jim s

3)   No difference and it isn't a VW system its a Bosch system that Volkswagen use.Same as BMW,Mercedes and Citroen.Bosch are the real brains in fuel systems not some bloody vehicle manufacturer, the level of precision engineering used in diesel fuel systems is way beyond VW or any other car manufacturer for that matter including Ferrari - chewbaka87

2)   The biting point tends to rise as the clutch wears out. Depending on how it's been driven at 85k miles it might be getting close to needing a replacement, but so long as it's not slipping and you can change gear OK I wouldn't worry about it.
I think it's a hydraulic clutch on the Polo, so it might be worth checking the fluid level. - EvelynThe ModifiedDog.

If there are no strange noises, clicking or prominent whirring than let things be. A clutch is a serviceable part and will not cause any serious damage when it starts to slip provided you get it changed promptly then. - L G

I realise that the diameter increases by about 3%, and this would cause an under-read on the speedometer, but the speedometer is about 3% optimistic anyway! My main query is, will the slightly larger diameter cause any clearance problems with the wheel arches or suspension, or will they fit ok?

Answers
1)   Why would you want to change tire sizes? Tires do more to effect how the vehicle drives than any other factor and you want to second guess those very clever German engineers who have already figured out what the best tire size is for your car????

I mean, if you wanted your car to handle like a Buick you should have bought a Buick, not a fine piece of German engineering. - JBF

3)   They will fit fine but I'm not sure why you'd want to do it. 205/60 isn't a common size and will be more expensive. The higher tyre wall will flex more when cornering and the handling will suffer (maybe not a lot, but it will). Stick with 205/55. They range of tyres in this size is huge and they are cheaper. - vavavoom

Can I change it's engine or maybe making it a better engine cause it's an old car but I want it to run fast. This sounds crazy but can I change a manual car to an auto car?

Answers
1)   You cant realistically change a car to a convertible. Pretty much anything else can be done. - jim s

2)   Changing a car to a convertible really would cost more than just buying one.The seats may be able to be swapped with some work but the seat tracks made into the floor pan are different between a 64 and 71.
There are plenty of places to purchase performance parts for air cooled VW's online. It is pretty simple on a Beetle to change from an automatic stick to a manual transaxle. You most likely would be better off buying a manual transmission parts car and swapping the parts over. You could also build the motor in the parts car while you leave the other motor in the car and drive it.There is a lot of difference between the 64 and 71. I would recommend putting the 71 parts in the 64 when you can.The 64 was originally a 6 volt vehicle but most likely by now has been changed over. - paul k

3)   check out www. cb performance.com and www.thesamba.com,it would be cheaper and easier just to buy a convertible .and you can change out the manual trans for auto but in the older bugs the auto trans you still have to shift just no clutch pedal.and the super beetle seats are inter-changeable.and vw did not make a 64 super beetle, they came out in 71 or 72.the super beetle had fuel injected motor as an option, and had strut front end where the 64 has king pin, front , - KAM

Can you convert vw bug vent window doors into a one piece window doors?...

Answers
1)   Yes, I have seen it and some VW shop have them. Just don't remember. - Kenny

2)   This is a relatively common mod. You have to remove the old window and the quarter-glass window framing and install a new seal, then remove the door stay that keeps the door open (otherwise, if you shut the door with the window rolled all the way down, the door stay smashes your window inside your door.) and install your new glass. The beetle doors didn't really have any guides, so you thankfully won't have to install new guides in the front, but you will notice that the larger piece of glass is not as firmly held in place. You can help this feel more firm by installing fresh window regulator hardware. A lot of people use the straight up-and-down kit from autoloc.com but JC Whitney still carries hundreds of different kits for this sort of thing. I do not know where to source the glass, but if your beetle is early enough, it should be a flat piece that any auto window shop can just make for you for cheap. Be sure to check in on the samba forum and the vwvortex forum for build advice. - portrait_of_nietzsche

Question 2
The heater on my 2002 VW Polo sometimes blows cold and sometimes hot.?...  There is no pattern to which it blows and adjusting the temperature dial has no effect at all. Have recently changed the heater control panel but this has not solved the problem. Any suggestions please?
No coolant level fine sat just below the max line.
Could you advise where the flaps are. Coolant level in radiator fine.

Answers
1)   i think your coolant level is low, check it. - Da Spicey Meat a Ball

2)   You say the coolant level is fine but did you actually check the level in the radiator it's self. It still could be low in the radiator. Let the car completely cool off before removing the radiator cap. - Larry E

3)   The flaps that regulate the warm air flow might be sticking. - Chris

4)   Have you broken into the water system? If you have you might have an air lock. You need to have the heater controls set to maximum when refilling system. - Dave

5)   If the temperature gauge shows a a big fluctuation then you possible have an air lock. Get the car to running temperature and check the coolant level in the header tank and then feel the bottom of the radiator inside the engine compartment. If the radiator is cold you have an airlock. If the header tank level is below the max line you must fill it to the line. - L G

6)   Lots of possibilities. It could be the radiator fan is coming on irregularly because of a bad thermal sensor, the thermostat could be sticking, the heater cables, valve, or air flaps could be bad.

First make sure the whole cooling system is working right, because the engine temp is much more important then the passenger temp. Both radiator hoses should be cold when you first start. The bottom one should slowly get warm, while the top stays cold until the engine is fully up to temperature. Then suddenly the thermostat should open and the top hose should get too hot for comfort. If not, then you either have low coolant, bad thermostat, or air blockage.

Then check the heater valve and controls. There will either be a cable or vacuum hose from the control inside, to the valve in the engine compartment. Have someone watch while you operate the control back and forth from high to low. If the valve is not making full movement, then the cable could be slipping or badly adjusted. If it is vacuum controlled, there could be leak or blockage.

Air flaps are harder to tell because they are not so visible, and I don't remember much what they look like. But again move controls and watch for reaction at flap arms and levers. - Motorhead

how do you check a rear ABS sensor on a VW polo 2000 plate 1.9 diesel?...

Answers
1)   unless you have special equiptment then you cant, all that you can do is to buy a new one and try it. - Pete

2)   get a multimeter and check the resistance between the 2 terminals of the rear sensor, and compare to the other sensors resistance, all should give some resistance somewhere near each other. - rob

3)   Disconnect the wire at the wheel sensor and then put a multimeter across the 2 wires the reading should be around 850 - 1200 ohms. - bty82892

4)   Test the resistance with a multimeter, should be the same as the other side, this only tests the unit, now flick the multimeter to A/C milli volts and reconnect to the sensor, now spin the road wheel by hand,it should generate an A/C voltage, faster you spin the bigger the voltage,if not strip it down and clean the reluctor ring, look for missing or damaged teeth when you do this then retest,if you now have A/C voltage take it for a spin, they self test above 5mph and if alls good the light will go out.
If non of the above work then your into diagnostic scope country and it time for the pros. - Q

What is the 0-60 on a stock 1967 vw beetle?...  I'm thinking about getting one and I wanna know how ridiculously slow it will be stock before a new motor and trans etc.

Answers
1)   Probably 25-35 seconds. They weren't designed for speed, and it will never be a "fast" car. - D

2)   Clearly the size of the engine is relevant but in most cases it is unlikely to get much below 20 seconds. - L G

3)   1971 Volkswagen Super Beetle 0-60 mph 18.2

The 67 would be slightly slower, because it had a single port head 1500 instead of the dual port head 1600. But the 67 1500 was the single most reliable engine ever built, in my opinion. And that is not all that slow. - Motorhead

4)   It definitely depends on the engine type. I have a '67 and it has the original low-end 1200 engine. I am lucky to get it to 60mph at all--though it usually can on a straight stretch in perfect weather.

I believe there were also 1300 and 1500 options available, which are obviously faster. I would think these would be no problem since my 1200 is able to keep up with traffic most of the time.

Keep in mind: people get really angry if you hold them up on the highways (even though the car can do the speed limit.. still not fast enough for some..) and most importantly, the bodies were not designed to be traveling at these speeds, so they do not fare well in collisions.

That being said, you can make some small safety modifications without compromising the car itself.. I would suggest a '68 + steering column, as it is collapsible (it makes a huge difference) - slack_alice

We recently bought a 2002 volkswagen jetta but the heat does not work. It blows cold air but no hot air.?...

Answers
1)   replace the thermostat. - Guts Mahone

2)   Bad thermostat, clogged heater core or radiator, VERY low on coolant, broken heater exchange knob or cable. - nywholesale

3)   I would put my money on the heat exchanger. Its kinda like a little door that opens and shuts to let the warmth from the heater core into the air ducts. If it was the heater core, the core itself would be cool while the car is warm, or you would smell coolant inside the car. If it was the thermostat. The car would either overheat or not warm up to normal operating temperature.

A common issue is the cable comes unhooked from the arm that move the door cam. Sometimes its as simple as, the screw that holds it on come out. - Big D

1)   Driven with respect for it's age,30 mpg should be easy - Ron

2)   Depends on how you drive it. Expect close to 30. - Aircooled Chick

i dont really drive like i stole it, keep the foot kinda light, usually only 60mph on the highway and i get 25-26 mpg. looking at the manual the car came with it says 26.1mpg. so im not too far off

look about the middle of the page

Question 2
2003 volkswagen golf 1.6 . Can i put a turbo in it?...  Hi,

i have a 2003 golf, its a 3 door , 1.6 petrol. its pretty quick but im thinking about putting a turbo in it, but is that even possible ?

cheers :)

Answers
1)   Anything is possible providing you have the expertise and the finance. The amount of work involved and the expenditure would deter me. Also you would have to uprate the brakes, tyres and suspension to keep your insurer happy who would then charge you an arm and a leg in extra premiums. Cheaper, and more sensible, to trade it in for a GTI. - Bazza

2)   dont even think of it, you have to modify too many things, mainly engine, lower compression pistons, manifolds, you need an oil cooler etc, etc, etc, the list is endless. - Pete

3)   It's possible, but way too costly and you will end up with a less reliable car. Don't build what you can buy. I have to agree with the other answers - trade it in on a similar year GTI. - Chris

4)   Anything's possible if you chuck enough time and money at it.

The question I think is "Is it feasible?" to which the answer's no. Compared to selling your Golf and buying a faster one (GTi) the cost of re-engineering the engine, brakes, suspension etc will be huge.
Also the insurance for a modified car will be a lot higher than for a standard faster one. - EvelynThe ModifiedDog.

Old VW Beetle, some things it may need?...  I know this is really vague, but I'm looking at a 66 VW Beetle, owner says it doesn't run. At first glance it all looks to be in good shape. The engine has good oil (I know it needs gas) and nothing looks broken. I'm not a car person, so what do you think would be some problems and what needs changed.
Thanks if you can help at all!

1)   put some fuel in it and a fresh battery, check for spark and compression and see if the carby/ies discharge fuel when accellorator is used

if those conditions are ok, it should work

dack-dacks (aircooled beetle's make that sort of noise) have been fixed and modified for almost as long as they have been made; so i'm sure there's a specialist or modifier where you live, google or yellow pages is your friend here - dickfaberracing

2)   replace brake lines, fuel lines, battery, make sure the engine is not seized by trying to turn the crank pulley (with car in neutral) if it doesnt turn freely its locked and is a major over haul. clean fuel pump, completely clean the carb and check the spark plug gap, adjust valves hook up battery and try to fire her up - Air-Cooled (o\ ! /o)

3)   go ahead and get it if the body is in good shape. You can buy almost verything inside the engine for about $300.00 and rebuild it yourself. They are the simplest engines to rebuild. Just make sure you are using a damn good torque wrench when you go to put it together. Get you a haynes auto manual to help you with the rebuild. - Leftybb71
