Question 3
Is there a diesel Jetta in VW's 2007 lineup?...  Or was 2006 the last year for the high-mpg diesel Jettas? Did they not sell well or what?

Answers
1)   Youre right they changed them and didnt make a 2007 model. The 2006 still used the 1.9 I think. The new ones suck. Why would they make the newer engines have less mpg's??? - Chris

2)   http://alternativefuels.about.com/od/dieselsbiodiesels/a/2007dieselhub.htm

The following article lists the several VW models (including the Golf and Beetle as well as the Jetta) that do not have a diesel model in 2007. The Touraeg is the only 2007 VW model available in diesel.

I confirmed this news with the following websites:

This article mentions that some 2006 models may still be sold in 2007...
http://www.dieselforecast.com/ArticleDetails.php?articleID=284

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?p=1337107
This is the best article I've found. Mentions that VW is building extra 2006 models to sell into 2007, and confirms that VW plans to release the diesel models again in 2008. Apparently the NO2 (Nitrogen Dioxide) emission exceed new limits.

http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2006-10-03-diesels-usat_x.htm
Says that the supply of 2006 Jettas should last through March [of 2007, I assume]

Hope that answers your question! Good luck with your purchase! - laburnic

3)   All of the smaller diesel VW models have been withdrawn from the USA market due to the Ultra-low Sulphur diesel fuel for 2007's onward, the limited availability of that fuel (some stations don't seem to have it yet) and the 2007 emissions rules for diesels. Only the Touareg SUV is currently marketed in the USA as a diesel. In other markets (I'm told even as close as Canada) more VW diesel models are available. Apparently only Mercedes decided to keep all previous diesel models in their USA markup, with other imported brands mostly withdrawing their diesel models. - jaquez

Question 4
Guys, do you find the 2010 volkswagen jettas girly?...

Answers
1)   Not girly nor manly. The 2010 Jetta is more of the "friendly" front face and overall body shape. Maybe "cute" if you will. But it's also "unisexual." If I guy drove a Jetta it's more manlier but if a woman drove one I can understand. BOTTOM LINE no, it's fine the way it looks. - CD

2)   No, not really. But it does seem more like a puny car compared to the Passat or CC, so I wouldn't buy it as a single man. But if I had a family and my wife or 16 year old drove it more than I, yeah, I would go for it. - Andrew

3)   No. I find it to suit both males and females. If you get it in red I think it looks a bit "manlier". Just don't blast any Britney Spears or Jonas Brothers in there and you should be fine. - ahaitsmike

Question 5
How would you compare VW Lupos with Golfs?...

Answers
1)   I would park them side by side and look at them.
I would drive each one in turn to see how they drive, handle etc.
I would do some shopping and check out the boot size.
I would make two lists of figures, 0-60 top speed, MPG litres boot space, costs etc, place the lists side by side and analyse them. - John

2)   There is no comparison between the two cars. Lupo is small and Golf is a bigger car. - Dave

3)   There is no comparison as the Lupo is a small city car and the Golf a family hatchback - Abhard6

My VW Passat 1.9 Broken down, I just want to know weather I have to Change the Engine or is there anyting else?

Question 1
My VW Passat 1.9 Broken down, I just want to know weather I have to Change the Engine or is there anyting else?...  Hi, a few days back i was driving my car all the sudden my car become very noisey after a mile my car started heavy vibration (seems like some thing happen in the engine). Later on my car engine went dead. when i tried to turn the key again the car wont start at all.
I have showed it to one of my friend the Engine water, time belt and oil were perfect. I just want to know that do i need to change the engine or is it some thing else?

Answers
1)   There are many things that can go wrong. If your car was overheating when it did this then you probably have to make some major repairs. But don't blame the engine just yet. The problem could be electrical which is much easier to fix. The only way to know is to take it to a mechanic that has an ECU scanner and good experience with german cars. - Aladdin Hubrack

2)   Impossible to say with so little information and possibly still impossible without seeing it.
You haven't even bothered to tell us whether it is petrol or diesel - Timbo is here

3)   the normal thing to do is get it towed to a reputable garage for a diagnostic check to find out the problem it may not be as bad as you think - J R

4)   The fallopian tubes are probably blocked. - Wat a Hero

5)   If the engine is turning over when you turn the key (and there is still oil and water in the engine) then all is not lost. Difficult, well impossible to accurately diagnose the problem on a web site though ! - L G

6)   Talk to a mechanical type or individual. (this is a good time to know for sure, who are your friends and who are those that want to "screw with your mind", and those that "just want to play {fake gear-head} so long as you are footing the bill" types. And give him the exact story as it happened:gear you were in; speed, sound, smells, feeling. I can't tell, from the way you describe it. It is a major minor problem maybe most likely.
Not saying that you "NEED" to go to a dealership. Just a good old time all around mechanic.
Whatever is most convenient. Except maybe 1 buddy.

Look at it this way, analysis is cheaper than replacing a motor(and faster).
Check your wheel nuts for tightness. While it does not kill the motor, it gives one heavy vibe as the wheel is hanging on by one lug. - It just struck me like lightning

7)   do you have fuel?when you can cranking is nothing wrong with you engine,is some of electrical problem - oskarciu

8)   you did get some silly answers, but, the vibration i had with my passat was due to a clutch plate the passat has a double plate the normal clutch plate and a second with large springs that expand as you accelerate to stop clutch wear from over reving, these plates break and cause severe vibration many cars now have these plates and in many cases the computer diagnostics in the car stop engines from running to stop more damage, if your car had run i would say it was a drive shaft,
the cost for the whole clutch cost me 800 quid but your worst senario is a big end has failed, (rare these days in modern cars) but you didn't say if the engine spins even if it doesn't start - smooth

Question 2
are Volkswagen's good cars?...  Just wanted to know if VW's are good cars?

Answers
1)   No once a volkswagen tried to mug me in a alley no they are not good cars - Adam

2)   it all depends on the year and model. for instance, I have an '81 Rabbit that runs like clockwork even though it's almost 30 years old. it even has the original engine and transmission. however, some of the newer models require a lot of maintenance in order for them to run properly. repairs can cost a decent bit more than your average car, which adds further cost to the car's upkeep. I just feel that it just costs too much money and time to own a newer VW than it does for something like a Honda. I used to have a '99 Passat 1.8T. the original owner didn't keep up on the maintenance, and the whole car turned into crap once it hit 120k because of which. if you plan on buying one that's new or only a few years old, I'd say go for it. if you're looking for a car that's an older model, look elsewhere. I'd recommend a Honda Civic or Acura Integra if that's the case. - Skag Baron™

3)   i will only drive volkswagens. i have a 2004 jetta and ive had a 2000 jetta and a 1986 cabriolet and an audi a4 (also a vw technically). volkswagens are extremely reliable but you must maintain them or they will break down on you. if you want one you have to stick to maintnence and they will last forever. - Kerrrrrrrrrrrrrr

4)   I Have many american Made Car's. all hot rods. yet my daily Driver Is a VW. I would rather have my 2 young kid's, Ride in It and it Moves out. with top end. Answer is , Hell Yes. - Paul

Question 3
is a 2007 Volkswagen jetta 2.5 a good car?...  I found a 2007 VW Jetta with 50,000 miles on it. I have never owned a VW...are they good cars?

Answers
1)   . - Briana

2)   NO! VW's are problems on wheels and expensive to fix. Please do not buy a VW. - Earl

3)   Don't do it, at least take it to a dealership to get checked out. - Jeff DeWitt

4)   The generation of VW that you are talking about is a decent car; its reliability is much improved over the previous generation (99-2004) in nearly every area. The engine, the 2.5 liter 5 cylinder, is one rough running motor, but, still, its been reliable enough. The automtatic transmission one area that has been a majour trouble spot of VW since 1975, has been replaced with a automatic transmission from a different supplier and has proven reliable enough.

My main issue has been the 2.5 motor is not a smooth or economical motor to run, but other than that it hasn;t been bad. The Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Mazda 3 are, at least in my humble opinion, better rounded vehicles, (with lower operating costs and/or improved handling/ride) but this Jetta is a good overall vehicle. It and the 2.5 Golf are the most reliable VW's currently available.

Just make sure you have a good independent VW specialist or dealership nearby for service. VW does require someone who understands the vehicle to keep in running reliably and cheaply. If you don't have a good dealership or independent service tech nearby, I'd then suggest taking a pass. Hondas, Toyota and even the Mazda have more independents and/or dealerships than VW. - a car nut

Question 4
What is a fair price to put a new radiator into my 2000 VW Beetle GL?...  I have been quoted $980 to replace the radiator in my 2000 Beetle GL. The reason given for the cost is that much of the front of the car must be taken apart in order to do the job. I think this is a good mechanic based on his yelp reviews but this is the first time I've seen him. He is in San Francisco, so that might affect the price.

What do you think? Is $980 a fair price?

Thanks!

Answers
1)   the mechanic is correct. The entire front end has to be taken apart, which is extremely time consuming. It will take the mechanic a full day to do it. So... it's a fair price. - cant_think_of_1

2)   Well, unless you got the tools and the knowledge and gumption yourself......then I guess the price the mechanic demands is classified as fair. Seeing as you are not "shopping around" for other prices. Then I got to ask, why would you want to replace it? Wrong color? - It just struck me like lightning

3)   i'm in the uk think i should be a mechanic in the us, a radiator for your vehicle in the uk is about $140
that gives a hell of a lot money to play with, out of your mechanics price, my passat has a similar problem to change the timing belt the front comes off $35 for parts $350 labor, look around my friend, you must get it cheaper or buy a tool kit and workshop manual its cheaper - smooth

4)   Have you looked under the hood? You practically have to disassemble the engine just a check the hoses! If the radiator costs $150, which would be reasonable, the labor of $830 seems steep ... but divided into an eight-hour work day, including taxes, and other parts (clips, hoses, etc.), it pretty much works out.

Those guys work hard for their money -- some days harder than others! - Bryce

Question 5
VR6 jetta / Vento wheel drive help?...  Hi,

I am intending to buy a 1996 Volkswagen Vento / Jetta 1.8 CL, And I want to drop a 2.8 VR6 engine into it. The car itself is a front wheel drive car, is the VR6 engine a front wheel mounted engine? or will I have to make modifications of any kind? Thanks for any help :D

Answers
1)   Its is a front wheel drive.

and incase you would like a little more info:- The VR6 engine is an internal combustion engine configuration, consisting of six cylinders. It was developed by the German automotive industry concern, Volkswagen Group in the late 1980s, and evolutions of the original variant are still produced by them today.

It is similar to a 'Vee' engine, but with the 'rows' of cylinders offset and tilted from each other by an angle of either 10.6 degrees (°) or 15° - instead of the more common 45°, 60°, or 90° as found on conventional Vee engines. - Jamie Andrews

2)   Mods necessary? Oh! Yes. Fuel pump, front and rear suspension, brakes, gearbox, radiator etc. Major job. - Fred Smith

3)   Sorry to state the obvious, why not just buy the Vento VR6 instead of buying such a headache ! - L G

4)   why pi ss about buy what you want to end up with - J R

I may buy a 68 bug but need some help?

Question 1
I may buy a 68 bug but need some help?...  I want to know the pros and cons of a 68 Volkswagen bug. Is gas mileage good, does oil go fast? everything and anything please?
I live in cali, it doesn't rain much, but it will be my first car and only car. I'm 19

Answers
1)   If you plan on using it as a daily driver, look elsewhere unless you know how to perform minor repairs and tweaks. It's 42 years old, you can't drive a car like this every day unless you can wrench a little. Did you have a look at the floorpans? Old VW's rust very easily, it's hard to find one with decent floors. They're extremely well on gas, they get between 30-40 mpg, sometimes more if you're on the highway. One thing you need to know is the fact that the old air-cooled VWs' heaters don't work. They just don't. VW could never really correct the problem on their own, but some aftermarket companies are selling kits to retrofit old air-cooled VWs.

Any old car is going to burn oil, you need to ask the owner if the engine is original. Companies like Mid-America Motorworks and EMPI sell brand new crate engines for air-cooled VWs, they also sell new reproduction parts for just about everything on your car. If the car runs okay, and the body and floors are rust-free, it should be a nice secondary car. Just don't make it your daily driver if you don't know to work on cars. - Skag Baron™

2)   There's really no heater, no AC, headlights are as bright as .....can't drive above 60 mph, death trap, etc....

It takes holds like 2 quarts of oil. After 3000 miles the oil light comes on and you'll check, you have a cup of oil left. No need to open the oil pan to change the oil, just pour new oil. Well, once in a while you should clean the bottom of the pan/dish.

It's a cool car to drive tho...don't think the mpg is all that great 25 maybe. - Kenny

3)   A 68 VW Bug and what how it does all of the things you ask depends on how much car work you can do or how much money do you want to spend to let others do the work for you. It will need its spark plugs cleaned and checked every 3000 miles. Valve clearances will need adjusted. The points will need to be check often too, filed and reset in order to get good performance and good mpg's.
It will develop engine oil leaks that are easy to fix. Uncared for VW's leak oil and run poorly. But those that grew up with them love them.
The thing that I don't like about these cars in the propensity for roll over. - Old Man Dirt

4)   Idk but I have a old vw work shop right near me cause Im buying one too but the people over there said that any vw bug passed 64 are horrible and are hard to fix thats why Im getting a 63 so idk i hope you find a good car. - Gold

5)   Pros:
Easy to work on
Will run forever if you maintain it
Good mileage for an inexpensive car
parts are easy to find
easy to find a mechanic for major repairs
easy to modify
great car to learn how to keep a car running forever
inexpensive parts available
IRS rides nice
Ball joint front end is good for the street
12 volt already
electronic ignition is only $45 and super easy to install (no more points adjusting)

Cons:
Old car
rust in pan (replacement parts are easy to get)
NEEDS general maintenance every 3000 miles (oil change and valves adjusted....less than an hour of time total)
Easy to steal
no AC

I have owned many old air cooled VWs over the years and still own a few. I drive a 1973 VW Thing (more or less a bug with a different body) daily by choice. In the last year, I have replaced the throttle cable twice, adjusted the valves 3 times and did 3 oil changes. I also upgraded the generator to an alternator and installed a Webber progressive carb. I get 26mpg and cruise at 70mph on the freeway every day, It is a GREAT car - Rod Knocker

Question 2
ive fitted 18'' alloys on my vw passat with 225/40/18 tyres and ive got a sound like wind blowing or something?...  hello all ive fited some 18'' alloys on my 2006 passat and ive got a sound when driving.not shaking or anything, the sound its like a whizing or roaring.the tyres size is 225/40/18.someone told that tyres should be 235 wide.can someone tel me if i should change tyres or its somethig minor.

Answers
1)   The reason you have that noise is because you have sacrificed comfort for looks and low profile tyres. Most cars fitted with low profile tyres and larger wheels are noisier than their original design, also they are a lot less comfortable with regards to the type of ride you get. My Passat has the original spec wheels, which I agree look crap, but it is one of the most comfortable cruisers i've ever owned and there is little road noise either. You might get some improvement by changing tyres but its a long shot. - Huge

2)   Sit tight. Enjoy the new look to your car and turn the music up high. After a while you will not be aware of the increase in noise. I have a set of 245/40/18 on a V8 Lexus and they whistle away all day. - Snowy

3)   tyre noise. common problem when using cheap ones. - Wat a Hero

4)   You don't say if you fitted brand new tyres / wheels or second hand ones.
Used tyres could be unevenly worn so causing noise.
Or new tyres could be a low price make - suggest you switch to new Avon ZV5 - they are currently the quietest tyres on the market - about £400 for 4. - CDC

5)   yes, it should be 235/40r18. Your speedometer & odometer/trip meter will read fast as a result.

the "roaring" of the tires is from the tread design of the tires. There are quieter tires out there, they don't look "racy" but, are nice and quiet such as:

Question 3
How much would insurance be on a 1998 white vw cabrio under my mom's name, but im covered to drive it.?...  yeeeea. well I just bought my car and my mom is going to insure it. she's about 38. so just wondering how much it would be to have me covered when I drive it. (: im 16. its a convertible.
my mom i think has a clean record and she is married

Answers
1)   Let me tell you, the newer the car is and the more it is worth, the more insurance will be. If your mom has a clean driving record, and is married, it shouldn't be all that much. It will be more if you are on it because you are an unmarried girl under 25. That's how my insurance company, Farmers, does it. When I first started driving, I had a Volvo and the insurance rates were outrageous, but that's because I was a young guy, unmarried under 25. But it ended up cheaper to put me on our 1969 Camaro, instead of my 89 Volvo. Basically, the younger you are, and the more your car is worth and how much it will cost to fix in the event of an accident, the more expensive your insurance will be. - bw626

Question 4
white smoke starting to come out of the exhaust and my vectra b is over heating?...

Answers
1)   head gasket probably gone - kt

2)   Head Gasket problem maybe...not a good sign. Sorry! xx - Amanda

3)   agreed headgasket - lambo11293

4)   If its really bad smoke then could be piston rings gone. If its a bit of white smoke then most likely steam, where water has leaked through the head gasket into the block and is being burnt up. Check your oil filler cap for white gunge. If there is some then most likely head gasket has failed and needs replacing. - Stephen P

5)   The best way to check the head gasket is to borrow/rent a cooling system pressure tester.
It is basically a pump and gauge that replaces the radiator cap.
You pump it up beyond normal pressure, like 25 psi, and see if it holds pressure for a 5 minutes.
It is doesn't, you have a leak some where, and you can probably see where.
(make sure you have filled the cooling system first, or else leaks are hard to find.)
If you don't see the leak but the pressure drops, then it could be the head gasket.
One thing to do then is pull the plugs and look for water in in the cylinder, or look for water in the oil.
Final thing is to then start the engine and see if the gauge jumps back and forth, which would mean one cylinder compression was leaking into the cooling system.
Another possibility would be to do a compression check, but that won't always catch a small head gasket leak that only fails under pressure.

But it is also possible you are just seeing steam from a cold engine, and the overheating could be a bad thermostat. - Motorhead

Question 5
How often do i need to change the oil in my volkswagen passat?...  Hi! I have a 2006 Volkswagen Passat. I had previously thought that I need to change my oil ever 3 months or 3000 miles. I read online today that I only need to change my oil every 5000 or at least once a year. Can someone clarify that for me? Thanks a million!
Thanks for your input...much appreciated!

Answers
1)   Follow the manual. VW built the car they would be the expert on how to take care of it properly. They don't see any benefit to recommending a shorter interval since they don't do oil changes. But if they make them too far apart and cars start breaking down they will get a reputation for poor quality and if its under warranty it would cost them a fortune to fix them all.

Nobody except the oil change places recommend a 3k/3 month interval. Its in their best interest to convince people to do it as often as possible because thats how they make money. - emiller1998

2)   Hi! I own and love my '06 VW GTI. It has the 2.0 liter turbocharged engine.
You did not specify which engine your Passat has, but most Passats sold have the 2.0 turbo .
My manual states to change oil every 10k.
Thats about once a year for me. I am not comfortable with this. So I change my oil and filter every 5k.
It only costs me $75 to let dealer do it for me. So I believe an extra $ 75 per year is not going to bankrupt me. Think of it as cheap insurance.
I tell myself that its mainly for the turbocharger, but even if it wasn't a turbo , I'd still do it.
I just clicked 60,000 miles on my GTI and its stronger than ever! I want to keep it that way.
Well, thats my opinion; hope it helps. - fenton

3)   I would suggest twice a year, with thinner oil in the winter and thicker oil in the summer.
That is mostly because of the difficulty starting in cold weather.
Since most people put on about 12,000 a year, that would be about every 6,000 miles.

However, if I had a turbo charger, I would use synthetic and then only change oil once a year.
That is because a turbo charger really needs the best possible oil, and really good oil is not effected by weather as much. - Motorhead

4)   the manual says:

5,000
10,000
20,000 & every 10,000 miles thereafter

However, engines is prone to causing excessive fuel dilution (and burning oil) from the direct injection system..... when the oil is has excessive fuel dilution, the protective properties of the oil go down the drain, causing long term wear to the engine. Best to do it every 5,000 miles to be safe.

Quoting the manual again... use a oil that meets VW502.00 specification and it is good year-round - cant_think_of_1

Is there such thing as a 4 door Volkswagen Beetle?

Question 1
Is there such thing as a 4 door Volkswagen Beetle?...

Answers
1)   No - Darius

2)   There was barely enough room for 2 doors, no. - robert a

3)   Yes, I know of at least one. A limo company in the SF Bay Area once had one; it was a one off conversion done in Southern California by a limousine conversion company there, I think it was a Krystal conversion, but don't hold me to that.

On the the samba.com site there is a link to a picture of a 4 door Beetle conversion, I don't know who did it.. but here's the web address: http://www.photobucket.com/albums/q33/Jeff_DeWitt/4doorBeetle.jpg

You'll need to manually type in the web address to see the picture, for some unknown reason the link doesn't work; but when you type in the address, you'll see the picture.

I don't think VW ever made a 4 door Beetle even as an experimental model. The "Thing" doesn't really count as it was considered in some areas as MPV (multi purpose vehicle) and therefore was a truck, and besides, it shared only the basic floorpan of the Beetle, not the body. The only air cooled 4 door VW's (other than a type II bus (and the for menioned "Thing")-- 2 frnt door, 1 side sliding door or 2 part opening door, plus rear door) was the 411 or 412. (often called a type IV or 4) The sedan was offered in both 2 and 4 doors, though the wagon was only two doors. In the US only the two door sedan had a manual transmission, the others had an automatic as standard equipment. It was a very expensive car for its time, late sixties, early 70's and didn't sell well at least in the US.

Hope this helps, a car nut. - a car nut

4)   If you can crawl in through the sunroof then you've got a 4 door beetle.

Otherwise no. It's a 2 physical door, 1 hatchback vehicle. - Theneelster

5)   not unless your stoned - mike

Question 2
Which would you choose, Civic, or Passat?...  Which would you prefer? A 2006 Maroon(ish) VW Passat V6 Turbo, or a Black 2003 Honda Civic LX?

Answers
1)   neither buy american - Levi Laguardia

2)   In all honesty I would choose the Passat over the Civic based on the fact that German cars are much better than Japanese. The V6 doesn't mean poor gas mileage. The Passat has more room and is more stylish versus the Civic, not to mention the simple fact that the LX doesn't come with a v-tech engine. That was only feature in the EX and SI models. The VW VR6 is a superior engine, better pick up, longer lifespan, and is a hall of fame engine. The Passat is a little more original and stands out better in a crowd than a Civic. Honda's are like tampons... every p*ssy has one. The aftermarket for Passat is slightly more expensive than Civic, but the parts are better quality and give the car a more unique look. - Christi

3)   um, the passat is newer, much bigger, much nicer equipped. I don't think they come with turbos on the v6, it's a choice between a turbo four and an n/a 6. either way, the choice is clear. To the numbskull that said "buy american": Most "american" cars are in fact built in canada or mexico with chinese components. The fit and finish is terrible, and they don't drive nearly as well as an import, nor do they hold their value as well. So, for the same money, why not get a decent car, yeah? - Dude

if i got a magnaflow race series for my 2001 jetta turbo would it sound like a fart can?...  im looking to get an exhaust for my 2001 jetta wolfsburg, but im just a student with a low budget so i cant afford a $1000 exhaust, and i really want an exhaust but i dont want a fart can.... i have no idea how it will sound on a jetta because i cant find any videos on youtube with a jetta that has that specific exhaust. so what should i do save for a long time or get the magnaflow race series?

Answers
1)   i will sound like a deep pitched fart can i would say get a blow off on your turbo thin it will sound jet right the any exhaust. race series sound awesome - Wes

2)   I have a 2003 GTI VR6 with a magnaflow catback exhaust. It will not sound like a fart can since magnaflows are primarily made for American muscle. At idle it has a nice rumble but when you put on the gas it has a more refined deep throaty pick up pitch to it that sounds nothing like a ricer. I would suggest sticking with the magnaflow because they are a highly recognized name brand exhaust that are priced well under $1000. You are probably looking at around $500 to $600 for a good one. - Christi

3)   Im not bashing your car but unless you have the complete exhaust done right it will sound like a fart can likje one of those dreadful honda civics that hang at autozone coffee can mufflers - Eric

Question 5
vw aircooled engine smoking?...  So, my buddy and I have built a 1776. We have quite a bit of experience with old VWs and have never had this much trouble with a new build.
New piston/ring/cylinder set, rebuilt heads.
1st time we fired it up, it started smoking. We shrugged and took it for a spin, but it only started to smoke more. We decided to pull it and tear it down. #4 cylinder has some carbon buildup on top of the piston, we thought maybe we just installed the rings incorrectly - so we pulled all 4 and did them again. 2nd time we fired it, it still smoked. So we decided to try a used set of heads from a good running used engine.. We're still getting white smoke at high RPM or especially after revving it up.
The only things we can think of are that:
a) the cylinder, rings, or pistons are defective. They are used and not returnable.
b) the rebuilt heads were not right. AND the used heads we thought were good aren't.
or
c) the rings just aren't seating properly. We assembled it with synthetic oil, since it's what we had around.

anyone?

Answers
1)   Your use of synthetic oil would be my first thought as to your problem. I was always taught to use reg motor oil until the motor was broke in, as synthetic will not allow it to do so because its to slick..........Then change from regular oil to synthetic after a few thousand miles..........md - Uncle Jed

2)   i would say keep running it for a while. did you break the motor in yet, rev it to 2500rpm for 15mins. the rings might not be seated yet. run it longer to get the rings and heads to try to set themselves

Question 2
Should I buy a 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio?...  I'm about to get my license and I want an affordable and fun car to drive. I have 15,000 to put into a car. I like the cabrio because of the price and convertible but I've heard that it doesn't last very long and that parts break all the time. Is this true about the 2002 cabrio?

I want a red one with black leather interior yay :)
Oh and I was seriously considering buying it used because there's not too many dealers that still sell them because they stopped making them years ago...

Answers
1)   No get a Lexus - Phil P

2)   well thats a bad idea........cabrios are old nd outta style............try eos............you can buy it for maybe 13,000 nd its way better then a cabrio.................plus yes they do break down cause those cars are like 8 years old now - J0$H

3)   no the cabrois are junk. i own a VW and i no that the cabrios were VW's "mess up'' car. they didnt build it right. i have a MK4 jetta VR6.....buy a VR6 or 1.8T NOT a 2.0 they are nothign but problems - vr6jetta2000

4)   I have a 1999 late model cabrio with 132000 miles, which would be the same as a 2002. Consumer reports said that the 2003 model had the least amount of repairs in the first 5 years.
Mine has been pretty good with no major repairs in the 7 years that I have owned it. The cruise control is the only system that has failed but I don't use that now that I am retired and do not commute to work 3o miles each way. It is the same basic car as the golf except no roof and same as a jetta except a smaller trunk. I have the manual top so that might eliminate any problems with the hydrolic system, very easy to put down from the drivers seat and can be put up easily alone. - Rosie

Question 3
Gone to change my oil on my VR6 but dont have a spanner or socket big enough?...  Does anyone know what size i need to buy to remove oil filter . oh before i forget it is a 94 Golf VR6 thanks
well Steve i know that already but if you knew anything about golfs you would know that its a cartridge type filter and your typical oil filter tool does not take off the cover on a golf oil filter but thanks for your help .

Answers
1)   There is an actual tool for removing the filter. It's called funnily enough and oil filter remover.

You can get them from any auto shop or even most Kmarts in there auto section.

They are not expensive. - s_raymount

2)   there is a special VW tool used for that......... damn german cars :( but hey gotta love them!!! - vr6jetta2000

3)   I just use a old filter wrench that i had laying around on mine. I have an 08 rabbit now, but it worked on my 98 gti vr6. unfortunately, its so old that the numbers wore off, but if i had to guess, its going to be around 22-24mm wrench, best bet is to just get an adjustable one. - John

Question 4
good deal? 2004 volkswagen jetta gls?...  im buying a 2004 volkswagen jetta gls sedan from a friend of mine, and he takes CARE of his cars. i was reading a bunch of reviews on these cars and alli see is problems, but the same is true for all other cars i look up, a few good reviews and all bad reviews. this car has 50,000 miles on it. is very WELL taken care of, and im getting it for 6900 bucks. im planning on driving it for maybe 2 to 3 years tops. so any info would be great, thanks.

Answers
1)   This isnt a bad deal. not a steal, but not bad. - jesse reed

2)   I have heard some horror stories about VWs as of late. Better keep another five grand for repairs.

There are plenty of cars with good reviews: Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Volvo. Money much better spent with those. Or if you can afford it, Mercedes or Lexus, Accura. - Alter Ego

3)   you won't be getting your money's worth if you only plan on having the car for that amount of time. the price is about right(if not just a little high), but there are better cars for the money. VW's go haywire roughly around the 120k mark. it'll last you a few years, but you can pick up a used Accord for the same amount of money and be able to sell it for more in a few years. - Skag Baron

Question 5
What would cause a 2001 VW Passat 1.8T to act like it's choking or sputtering?...  I'm looking to buy a 2001 VW Passat 1.8 Turbo. The guy has all service records of everything, oil changes, water pump and timing belt changes. It has roughly 150,000 miles on it, body and interior in great shape, he's $5100. It'll need new tires before this winter, the tread on the front two tires is completely worn. I test drove it today and it sometimes made this high pitched whirring or squeaking noise, kind of like how some cars make when you turn the car on with the air conditioner already on, sounds like a fan, but with VW's and Jaguars Ive driven the fans are super quiet and it just sounds like a hair dryer, but quieter and more airy sounding. I can't explain it too well. The biggest problem is that when you're coming to a stop or when you're idling it acts like its choking and it sputters, but it wont die. All gears shift very smoothly otherwise. He said there was something wrong with it, I believe he was referring to that choking problem (I think), but it was a $300 repair he said. I was going to offer him $4500-$4700 because of the repairs and needing new tires. Is it worth it? What could cause this problem.

Thanks for your time!
yeah if the turbocharger went, that would be over $2000. :(

Answers
1)   Sounds like a problem with the vacuum system if it happens at idle.It could be a check valve that is not working. Since the guy knows how much it cost to fix he must have an idea of what the problem is. Call and ask him then call a VW shop and ask them. Better yet pay them to inspect the car a $100 to do that could save you more in the long run. - uthockey32

2)   It could be the the turbocharger, in which case its going to be a lot more than $300 repair, the high pitched sound may be unrelated to the sputtering, which could also be caused by bad ignition coils, as well as many other things. - pbleek

3)   hi

stop reading all the answers it could be anything get it checked out. At 150,000 miles what do expect. - Shaun
