A VW beetle is not a good car for anyone, unless you are a pixie who loves flowers and all things fluffy!

Buy a golf instead.

Joking aside, try and sit in a beetle and adjust everything to suit yourself, if it fits then go ahead, if it doesn't look elsewhere.

You don't want to be driving around in a car you can't see out of or control properly.
Bankity Bank

It's as good a choice as any
itsgallus

The Beetle is built on a Golf chassis. These rate high in crash test safety. If you buy one do the right thing and get a bud vase for it.Look up VW bud vase you will find them.
Gerry

I have a VW beetle right now, and I am 5'7 and it is very roomy for me. I would just test drive it. You can always move the seats closer to the front. There is also a crank to elevate the seat up wards as well, because in the beetle there is a massive dash, like you have never seen in a car, nor a truck.
The crank seats up are in all VW, so if you don't want a little car you can get a Jetta.
Ashley T

i would go for the golf, or the rabbit. looks better and they are very easy to drive due to their small size and great all around visibility. they also have more powerful engines, and due to the options that come standard you will probably get better seats. better seats=adjust to exactly what your body needs.
in the end though, you have to go out and just drive the cars to see which you like best, its your car afterall.

"please dont recommend fords, hondas or hyundai" i like your style! ;)
drivefastcars

VW's are great, but costly to maintain. However if your buying a new one you dont have worry because that would be covered by the dealer. For a 16 year old buy a GTI , or a golf they are great
gobs1123

It would be great little car for a 16 year old with all the airbags and safety features it has just be sure to keep your mirrors adjusted properly as they are kinda small limit yourself to one passenger till you have some time under your belt Don't get distracted while driving put the cell phone away while driving and enjoy your VW I've had three over the years 88 jetta ,99 golf ,09 rabbit by the way my first car as a 16 year old was a 4door Belair so the VW is a step up.

1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle ?

When I go out to start it up, it starts right up immediately. After I drive it around for a while, it acts like it doesn't want to start. It eventually does after several strained seconds. After it sits overnight, it starts right up again ! What's up ? Thanks !!

These are super reliable when well taken care of, sounds like you need a tune up.
How long has it been since you had it done?

Your trouble could be dirty carb, bad points, but it sounds like as the motor warms up extra air is getting in. Something may have vibrated loose, so it would be good to have a tune up to locate the item.
Matthew

your carb is dirty, need to clean it up!
Roger T

I'm fourteen, and ever since I was 7 I wanted a vintage VW Beetle as my first car.

My Dad's best friend has both a 1973 Beetle and Super Beetle and has been teaching me how to fix it up and keep it well maintained. He's giving me the Beetle, so I'm not exactly sure about the Super Beetle, (but I imagine it isn't much different) but it sounds like you could just use a tune-up. While you're at it you should probably just clean it up as best you can. You'd be surprised how many problems can be fixed with a good tune-up and a little cleaning.

Hope tihs helps out :)

The valves on these cars need/must be adjusted every 3000 miles. Sounds like as your valves heat up your timing gets off and the car dies. When they cool the car will start again. Get a complete tune up. You did not say how long the car had set up. Wish I could send you pics of mine but don't know how on this site
twhoodoo

Could be any of the following:
Choke not opening
Fuel filter blocked or partially blocked
Plugs fouled
Float level incorrectly set
Damaged float
klippies

Your description of the fault of the fault is a bit vague. - however from what I understand the car cuts out after you drive it for a while. Then has difficulty in starting until it is cooled down.

This sounds like your choke is not opening as the car gets hot. Take off air cleaner and look down on carburettor - the top cylindrical disk is for the choke. It is electrically controlled with a heater - as the heater gets hot, it opens the choke. These electric heaters fail over time.

Run the car and when it gets hot, check and see if the choke is opening. If it is not - then that is your problem.

If this is okay, I would next check petrol filters and petrol pump.

If this is not what is happening, but the engine cranks over with difficulty when you try and start the car - then your problem lies in other areas.

is it possible to fit an old beetle with a new engine?

i have an old VW beetle, but i want a new enging fitted so that it doesnt keep breaking down. is it possible? roughly how much would it cost?

you can put Subaru engines in, the downside you need to find a spot for the radiator, you will also need an adaptor plate, flywheel, heavy duty clutch and maybe a new starter motor as the old one might struggle a bit. you would then need to get an report for it since you changed the motor, so i would say about $2500+AUD, really it isn't worth it as the body will be most likely be rusty also. if you wanted to keep the car and do it up that could be an option but you will never make money off it.

you could look for an old engine from another car, or just get yours done up, all of this costs money though.. might be an idea to use it as a sunday driver and have another car as your daily drive.

there are specialist who do nothing but vw pancake engine rebuilds.back in the day they were cheap, you just gave em yours.90's it was a few hundred bucks so nowadays its probably like 10,000,000 or so.
idontgivafork

Yes, you certainly can.

Only of the air cooled type. If it keeps on breaking down(even with an old engine (YOU are driving it wrong or something to that sense) I have taken engines out of 63's station wagen and stuffed it into stationwagens of the68 variety(you take what you can get for free) and hauled off the next day 500 miles without first doing a test run.
Put the engine in, battery in, loaded up the car and in the morning hauled "Azz". Found myself going up hills on the highway maxed out in second gear(60?) Just because I did not want to slow down and go into the slow lane. There was no need for it(I mean I could have driven at a more leisurely pace but I was "gung-ho" at the time (it is a wonder I didn't throw a rod) on a motor that had 250K miles on it and I did not know its repair history. It was a stock motor. But I did not hurt it any.
It is meant to be driven hard. Lugging it around like a granny who hates the stick shifter will kill the engine quickly...that is a fact.
60K miles and you are rebuilding the engine.
Second to third shift on the low end is about 30 mph. On the higher end 45(so 60 was very high and is asking for trouble if maintained for long) even on a solid engine. On a high mileage engine I got lucky. Drove it the next day another 500 miles almost constant...just stopping for gas.
The only difference between a pancake engine and a beetle is the "doghouse".

They are not a 'High reving engine" like Japanese cars, because they have a long stroke. Not an engine for burn-outs. But they will lug at low RPM like a diesel and pull you out of a mudbog or in icy conditions where the tires need to turn slowly to move you; whereas a Japanese model gets to stall or stay spinning its tires going nowhere fast.
That goes the same for the water cooled engines. It is their design and why the engines have a long life.
Habitual Liar

Yes you can, but if by "break down" you mean it quits running, a new engine may not help.

You have old wires, carb, electrical, and fuel system.

So if the engine is still running after each break down, I would take the "new engine" money and go after everything else.

Then it will be good till the engine really does go "Kablewy".

If you have good oil pressure/ no oil consumption/short end play on the front pulley, I'd get the rest of the stuff done.

Small "pincher bug" looking thing that jumps/pops up off the ground?

I was in my kitchen, and I saw this tiny bug that looked like a small pincher bug but without the pinchers on the end. He pops off the ground whenever i touched him like he has springs for legs. No antennas, and he looks brown-ish. I put him in an empty waterbottle for now.

So that is what happened to Spiderman. Let the poor guy go, his girlfriend is missing him.
klippies

If it has 4 wheels, and is ladybug shaped - then it is a VW Beetle.

They do not have antennae, and have been known to have been sprayed in brownish shades.

BUT, it will not fit into an empty water bottle.

What do you mean - it is an insect. If that is the case, why post the question on the Volkswagen area. Rather let the creature go outside back to its natural habitat or top become food for some bird in the natural life chain, rather than upset a bunch of VW nutters.

What should I know about my 1973 VW Beetle?

Ever since I was 7 (and learned how to play the game "slug bug") my dream first car has been a vintage VW Beetle. My Dad's best friend has a 1973 that he is selling to my Dad for me. It's a fixer-upper, which is fine because I'm only fourteen. But I was just wondering any general things I should know about this car from other owners of 1973 Beetles. Like: gas mileage, tips, or even comments on the car.

If you have any great websites about the car (not necessarily about the history, I already know plenty about that.) or pictures, that would be great.

Thanks a ton :D

The beetle is the ideal project car. They are regarded as classics, however, if you are looking for a project to create a performance car, look at something else. Yes, you can modify the beetle motor up, but this is not generally what you want to do to a classic car.

There are plenty of spares outlets for the beetle and numerous forums which can assist you with the restoration.

Would definitely recommend that you spend some time browsing the SAMBA website

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/
and also this site

and this one

Also there are many good books on maintaining the Beetle some of them available as e-book on internet, typically ,

SEE-- lots of help. And will be the same as when you get going on the project.

Word of warning: Dads going to be driving it!!

So IF he puts a dent in it, scratches it or has a really big crash, Just say "I had so much fun with you putting it together- I'm sure we can have as much fun fixing it!!!"

It'll be the hardest thing you have ever said- But say it with a smile and don't put a car between you and your dad.

What to buy? 2010 Mustang v6 or 2010 VW GTI?

I need to buy a new car and I can't decide.. (both have nav package)
The mustang: interior ambient lighting, SYNC, nicer interior
The VW: Very cool integration of navi with the in-dash screen.

I need some more pros/cons and what you would rather buy and why.
BTW: They are about the same price.

I'd go w/ the Ford. The V6 and it's rwd will provide a great ride that is much quieter. The VW's ride would be harsh & choppy. I like them both, but VW really hasn't impressed me lately.
The Eagle Keeper

Being the VW nut I am, I'm not too impressed with the new GTI's. Maintenance costs are through the roof with those things.
With the Ford, you've got that smooth accelerating American V6, Rear wheel drive that isn't gonna be near as choppy as that Turbo 4 cylinder. But, the fuel mileage compared with the v8 stang and the v6 stang, In most cases I know of, people get better MPG's outta their V8 stangs than the V6s.
Honestly, If I weren't in so deep with VW's and BMW's, I wouldn't mind having a Mustang. Cheaper parts and maintenence, Lots and lots of sources for performance parts, and it's American.
Calvin W

Go with Gti, i would take any time over Ford..(my opinion)...i like vw!
