Should I get a VW Passat?

Should I get a VW Passat?

I am really really interested in a 2006 or 2007 VW Passat, and I am looking a purchasing one soon. Is there anything I should know about them or something that would further encourage me to purchase one?

You should just probably get a bright green WV beetle with big, white flowers plastered all over it.
CaffeLatte

THEY ARE GERMAN CARS THAT GET GREAT GAS MILEAGE AND THEY ALSO LAST LONGER ON THE ROAD THAN MOST OTHER FOREIGN CARS.
Daddy Kay

They are very nice cars. Reliable and safe BUT once they break the parts are very expensive.
ckoriginal930

ohh god.....look at the passat history shall we? theyre not really good,id get a golf or a jetta. if its a wv
Ed M

Just keep in mind that they HAVE to take premium fuel! It can be expensive, even with the great mileage you would get. Unless of course you get a TDI (diesel). Diesel is great too, you only need an oil change every 16,000km! (sorry I don't know what that is in miles)

I've driven my friend's Passat and can vouch for its sports oriented handling and power. The interior is top notch and class-leading. The fit and finish excelled also. There was a certain 'presence' about the way it calmly took curves. We have a 2005 Jetta, however, if I need a larger car in future I'd definately buy a Passat.

south mimms service station A1M truckstop part pump 1 when you pay they ask for a vat no just make one up its easy ,

Unless you are "licensed" then it is illegal anyway.
If you were licenced then you would know.
photog

its illegal unless its for a farm vehicle! just be careful you dont get stopped by police if you put it in a normal vehicle.
SugarPlumFairy

you can buy it but you can't use it in a car .
fritya56

i sometimes run it in my truck when im low on money (off road diesel has no road tax on it) but my truck has a log farm license plate on it so i dont get bugged about it. i get it from smaller older gas stations. theres a station by my house that still pumps gas for you. they have it but its harder to find. try a phone book.

Yellow pages--fuel supplies--order youself a 45 gallon drum of red and have it delivered to your required site/boat or agricultural site.It is illegal in road vehicles, the customs dips test specific gravity and also the red dye is a dead give away.I believe you can add fullers earth to red to remove the dye,but its your risk, your vehicle will be confiscated on the spot if you are caught and that is just the start. The EU is taking measures to try and get it outlawed in Britain.I cannot see it being discontinued in the present economic climate as it would cripple the boating industry. If there is a canal marina near you in London you can buy it from them as well, service stations are the places that you get caught by customs.

Here in the U.S.

Red Diesel is un-taxed fuel..........thats why it is dyed red

It used in official use ........like government sponsored projects , offshore, farming , oil production, ect

It stains the inside of the engine with a blood red color also.
"Not today, Zurg!"

Wouldn't use it on the road - traffic cops now routinely carry a dipping device to check it.

Why would I want a Volkswagen golf diesel opposed to a non-diesel?

I'm looking at purchasing my first car and I am really interested in MK1 or MK2 golfs.

I want to buy somewhat of a project car (something that still runs though) and fix it up.
I have found a 1979 Diesel Rabbit on craigslist that looks like its in okay condition but I do not know much about engines but I'm a quick learner.

Would a diesel be easy to tinker with than a gasoline engine or does it not matter?

Asked by: S @ 2009-04-08 07:26:37

[Best Answer]yep diesel is definitely easier to mess with. the parts are built to be stronger and handle more stress so if you are upgrading forced induction then you wont have to worry about the bottom end like a gasser

however...........those are pretty old and i doubt they make any performance parts for either gas or diesel for that model

ps-to this indee girl........... torque is EVERYTHING

I've been looking into tdi as well, trying to compare tdi vs reg turbo. My husband is a big factor since he works on all of our vehicles. He has told me that diesel engines are actually easier to understand because they have less parts than a gas engine. I've looked at some tdi forums and I've found this one to be helpful: http://www.tdiclub.com/

I think it would be so awesome to get 50 mpg, and I love the way diesel engines sound. And ultimately I hate filling my gas tank up every week.

But, from what I've read it costs a lot to do things to the tdi performance wise compared to a reg turbo engine. And one of the biggest factors in my new car will be performace. I have a kia now and hate, hate, omg hate it. I've noticed that the tdi engine has the same hp as my kia rio :/.... I know the torque is more but I'm not sure what difference that will make. I haven't test drove one yet.

I hope i helped you a little, I know I'm just a girl and don't know much. But my husband is way into engines any questions you have I would be more than happy to ask him :)

Good luck

**Thanks john, I'm getting more convinced by the minute.

Keep in mind diesel can be a bit harder to find at gas stations, esspecially small local stations.

I was going to buy a TDI but ended up with a Passat Turbo, I love it!!

As with all 30 yr. old cars replacement parts can be a challenge. A friend bought a '79 VW Diesel Rabbit new and drove it for 10 trouble-free yrs. until he 'totaled' it in a crash. He said it averaged 46 MPG. He said it was such a great car that he is going to buy a new VW Diesel soon.
I would suggest getting a car repair book for the Rabbit .
Also, I believe either engine would be similar to 'tinker on'.

How do I tell if my 2001 Volkswagen Passat is a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder?

Asked by: Jennifer @ 2009-04-08 13:02:43

Answers ::
If it's a 6cylinder, it'll have V6 on the trunk lid.
if it's the 4cyl. turbo, it should have 1.8T on the back.

if nothing is there, then look under the hood, it should say on the little white sticker attached to the hood or front of car.
the engine probably has a plastic cover, that'll say as well.
Eric F

The most basic way is to count the spark plugs.
brad

If you don't want to open the bonnet (hood) and count plugs or look and see if you can see 2 cam (valve covers), check the serial number.. IF it starts with (if its a Passat will always start with wvw).... wvwac...wvwhc.. wvwpd, wvwvd, then its a four cylinder turbo; if it starts with wvwah, wvwdh, wvwbh, wvweh, wvwkh, wvwjh, wvwlh, wvwph, wvwsh, wvwrh, wvwth, wvwvh, wvwxh, wvwwh, wvwyh... then its a 6 cylinder model.

I'm assuming of course, that your vehicle is stock (hey, I've seen all sorts of things under the hood of some of these VW's)....

Hope this helps, a car nut.
a car nut

All 2.0 liter engine sizes and under are 4 cylinder, the 6 cylinder engines have at least 2.5 liters.

You can type your registration into one of those online insurance sites they usually give you your cc.

well there are safer, cheaper cars out there, but if you like the bug those are alright. there are dangerous in terms of accidents, and are easily broken into. just know what you are getting into before-hand. plus, make sure she can drive a manual...some people just CANT learn for whatever reason-and as far as i know, they are all sticks. my brother had a 67, and it was stolen and stripped completely...he was heartbroken. also, the doors are super thin, and the steering column is a metal rod with no give on impact-i have heard of people getting impaled by them. it's a cool car, and i love them, bu they are a liability too, and you could buy a newer "safer" car if you wanted to too. it would be an awesome first car in my mind though! good luck!
mkcman04

I understand your vision of a cool car and your daughter driving it but while she may find it cute, compact, good looking retro car, the reality is a little bit different than this:

http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj266/donaldjl/Transportation/Beetle_Girl_3.jpg?t=1239293109
You see this is a rare car so 5000$ on those adverts is no surprise and you don't even know the condition until you see them inside. They might be just a rust bucket. As a new driver while the insurance might be a little bit cheaper on classics, the parts certainly wouldn't be if something breaks and the garage fees won't be cheap either considering parts are also rare hence why it's retro. She might be careful driver but imagine if somebody else bumps the panels, brakes the glass or gives it a slight scratch. On top of that these cars don't have power steering, good economy engines, and probably a decent heater.
If you ask me buy as a present something modern but cheap, 4 door car so she can take her friends, small size engine to doddle around, and most importantly a reliable vehicle that she won't have to take for service the first day you give it to her. Let her decide after she's driven a year or so what she really wants.
Traktorist-Hooligan

To put it simply. Her earnings will not be going into repairs due to breakdowns. If she knows the basics. Check the oil, the fan belt and the fuzzy dice.
Best answer usually the simplest

how much oil goes in a 2004 vw jetta 2.0 liter?

Total oil capacity is 4.5 qts. Be sure to change filter too. IMO get a genuine VW oil filter. There is a difference.
