kraigs list

Craigs List is good. The Auto Trader. The newpaper. Where ever you would normally buy a used car. These things can be hard to come by, and to get the one you want you may have to travel a little bit. You could try going onto Volkswagen sites that are in your area, they will often have forums where people list vehicles they have for sale.
ie: dubberz.com
A lot of Local car clubs also have websites. The guys who know volkswagen, know volkswagen Find those people in your area, you will have a better shot at finding a Beetle that doesn't need a lot of TLC.
The coolest girl you know

eBay is also a good place to start. And go online to find a local VW club -- they'd be a real good source, with good info on what to look for!
Bryce

Here you go. Left side gives you the type of car. Right side gives you location. Have fun... And look at all the places other people mentioned too. :-)

Attention: Clutch noise?

I drive a manual car. Every morning I start my engine and
let it run for five minutes. Then only I take off my car.
The problem here is, when I release my clutch after
shifting to second gear, there's a noise (spring like) but,
as it goes to third, fourth and fifth gear, the noise reduces.
Apart from that, the noise is more louder if the engine
is let to run less than five minutes esp in the morning.
Normally, when it comes to afternoon and evening,
there's no noise. What could be the possible problem?

you probably need a new clutch...they don't last forever.

clutch or throw out bearing may be going out, or may be universal joints/drivedhaft or axle.

By your description, it cannot be the release bearing. This will only make a noise when you push your clutch in and with your foot on the clutch.

It sounds as if it is a problem within the gearbox as you say that it occurs after shifting to second gear and then continues as you go through the rest of the gears (release bearing would be same noise regardless of gear you are changing).

I would check the gearbox oil, It seems strange that you say it goes away as the day progresses which would hint that it is not mechanical damage. Check gearbox oil if OK, maybe change oil - viscosity may mot be right.

What I think you're referring to is transmission whine. Like previously stated, get your gear oil levels checked.

It is not your throwout bearing, you'd know if you had issues with that.

Is a VW beetle a safe car?

I am turning 17 in a year and a half, and need to start saving for a car. But i need a goal to reach, and i was thinking about a beetle.

The original beetle is about as safe as a nail-bomb, but they are fun, and economical if in good repair. Im not sure how the new bug fares in crash tests but im sure it miles apart from the originals.
kevin

i wanted one and today my grandma was like thats not a safe car but she didnt really say why
JoNaS <3

Old Beetles are not, prone to burning. The new one, yes. The New Beetle is based on the Passat and it passed the stringent crash test standards by ADAC.
Jay

If you are talking about the new Beetle, it is probably as safe as most other cars on the road. With regard to the new Beetle it lacks the character and charisma the older air-cooled Beetles had. Therefore, if this is the car you were thinking about, I would look a bit wider at the car market.

Now if you were thinking of the old air-cooled classic beetle, you cannot go wrong. They are reliable if looked after (regardless of what many people say), they are easy to work on with parts still reasonably easy to obtain and most of all you will discover what motoring is all about. And incidentally, even though they don't have air-bags, they are still reasonably safe.
Replica

Sorry but it has been rated most unsafe car and most unreliable and powerless made. Consumer reports says it is one of the auto industrys worst blunders. I sell Toyota and had at least 10 less then 1 year old beetles traded in for these reasons even though they lost up to 10,000 on trade.

vw golf occasionally starts in limp mode and black smoke out of the exhaust?

Yes you can - yeast needs warmth to activate, and as long as you get the dough in the fridge asap you should be ok with it.

I wouldnt let it prove first then knock it back before putting it in the fridge - just make it and put straight in the fridge.

You then need to place it in a warm area and wait til its doubled in size before knocking it back and waiting for the second rise.Cheers

check all exhaust capillaries and if no leak corruptions take to a mechanics if there are fix them
AnD

I quite like the suggestion about putting it in the fridge overnight.

Seriously though, if it is a diesel golf I'd suspect the "glow plugs" right away.
NotEckyBoy

Sounds like a bad coolant temp sensor. Get it scanned and repaired.
racefish68122

Couple of reasons - Some damaged oil seals are causing engine oil to leak into the combustion chamber, or engine timing is out of place as a result of which some fuel remains unburnt and is being let out as black smoke. The car requires a professional check and possible repair.

does the New Beetle still get a response?

I want to buy a 2000 New Beetle and I'm just curious, do they still get a reaction from people when you see them on the road or on the highway?
Even if its bad like "I hate those cars", hey, thats something. I'm just wondering if they've become too....blah or tired; something you wouldnt give a second look to, like your ordinary Toyota (no offense to those owners, I like them fine, too).
EDIT: I know they got a lot of attention in 1998 and for the next two years. I was hoping some of that same inspiration is still alive.

they still get lotsa looks...especially if u doll it up to look like no one elses...one idea i thought of when i had mine was from a pic i saw in a modeler magazine of a new beetle with a solid stripe down the center, a roof rack, wide whites and baby moon style hubcaps that looked like theold beetle hubcaps, thus making it look like a retro 60's beetle...

there r thousands of ideas only limited by ur imagination...

the bottom line is 25 silver beetles in a town of 10,000 don't really get everyones attention when they drive by, but that one that looks different than all the others, like the powder blue one that they made VERY few of gets more attention.

good luck and GOD bless.
junkyarddogfan

Can't speak for all Beetles, but mine still gets 2nd looks. Its cyber metallic green with a black hood cover and custom wheels.
Keep it clean and waxed; most important, keep a semi-shine on the tires too.
Have 90K reliable miles on mine!
Oh BTW, I still haven't gotten a reaction from 'the Law' ,but thats a good thing as I enjoy driving fast.....
fenton

I think they will always get more attention than most cars. I always look when I see one but then I'm a VW fan. I have a 64 Beetle and I pulled into the bank next to a new Beetle the other day. I think the bank employees enjoyed the sight.
Angel70

Regardless of what new owners say, no they do not get much attention now days. So much so that we will probably see a change in shape in 2010. Now those may get some attention initially.

Check out this site - incidentally it is a bad time to buy a new car when the next model which is completely different is about to be released.

Stay true to its VW roots and paint it Ginster (yellow). Its a specific shade used for GTI's and Beetles! Looks awesome. And with a black interior w00t w00t!

the hood wont open on my 2000 vw passat?

So when I pull the handle on the inside to pop the hood, the little lever on the outside hood that you pull to pop it just shoots out and so i cant open my hood....any ideas? is this a difficult/ expensive fix?....let me know if i need to clarify cause it is kind of hard to explain

crow bar just kidding sounds like you re gonna have to take it to a mechanic unless you have a friend that is mechanically inclined

well what i would at shop would be reach under the grill and pull cables or latch to open it then see why or what is the problem shouldnt be hard to replace or fix not much to them as for price could say what a lock would cost but it would be a dealer item but any shop or yourself could replace it or cable
kelly_f_1999

If you pull on the tab that comes out, what happens?
