Does a VW Beetle make me look fruity?

Question 1
Does a VW Beetle make me look fruity?...  I'm 6'0 tall. 220 pounds. I fit in a beetle NICE! Worrying that my friends will start teasing me. Getting a great deal on one.

Answers
1)   Yes, you look fruity from my point of view. - Dying Turtlemouse

2)   Only to people with the gain turned up too high on their gaydar. - calnickel

3)   new beetle.....yes
old beetle......no - jared

4)   never let other people decide on your cars/house /women/shoes/shirts/pants/etc etc/if they are paying then they can decide/give them the chance/"listen if you think its fruity buy me what you want with your money and hand it over"that ought to shut them u p - ken k

5)   Depends on the year. If it is the 'new' Beetle, then yes (especially if convertible). If it is a classic (example 1974 Super Beetle), then no. At 6 feet, 220 lbs., you should not feel compelled to worry about it. I had a '70's era Superbeetle in the 80's for 10 years. Today, I drive a Honda fit I've owned for several years; who cares what anyone else thinks. They are fun vehicles. Enjoy it and good luck with the electrical system. - Topherelli

6)   GAWD!
If you're THAT concerned don't get the vehicle. Go on out and get yourself a HUGE planet killing pick up tuck or SUV. Preferably something that gets the WORST mileage. You'll *look* really cool. - Jim

7)   depend on color man - Yazan Alkhateeb

8)   Only if it is pink. - Motorhead

9)   if you are 6'0, 220, and it's an old beetle, i'm pretty sure you'll have no problem defending your decision. besides, the old beetles are a blast to drive. anybody who says otherwise is a tool. - Ron

Question 2
rear disk brakes dragging?...  my rear disk brakes locked up a few days ago. i let the car get warm and they finally loosened up but still dragged a lil bit. i havent drove the car in a few days but ive got in it to see hows the brakes are acting. sometimes they are just dragging and sometimes they are locked. im good at turning a wrench but i have no clue what the problem is or what to replace.
99 volkswagen jetta. AEG motor. first model of the jetta.
parking brake is fine.

Answers
1)   First thing you wanna do is make sure there is no air in the lines. Then from there check to make sure nothing is loose, then most likely replace the disc pad if it goes that far.. Sounds like you might have air in your brake lines tho. - Michael

2)   Could be a hung up cable. Bad anti lock module. Bad calipers. - Ironball

3)   What kind of car do you have? There are a large number of different designs. Generally air in the system would not cause the brakes to drag. Air in the system is generally going to give you a spongy pedal. The possible causes that it could be, is a faulty E-brake (cable, adjuster ect...), or siezed caliper piston. My advice for you is to take off the wheel, and take off the caliper, check the piston, you mentioned that they locked up previously, chances are you are going to need new calipers if they overheated extremely, it could have also warped your rotor. If you dont feel comfortable take it to shop. We need a bit more information before i can give you a definative answer. Good luck - Tom I

4)   THE SLIDE ON THE CALIPERS ARE STICKY OR A E-BRAKE IS STUCK ON A LITTLE OR YOU OR SOME ONE PUT SOME THING OTHER THAN BREAK FLUID IN THE MASTER CYCLINDER. TAKE IT TO A PLACE THAT DO FREE BREAK INSPECTIONS AND THAY WILL TELL YOU WHATS GOING ON. MOST MAJURE AUTO REPAIR SHOPS DO FREE INSPECTIONS. GOOD LUCK - gunbunny2bg4u

5)   The brakes need to be dismantled and the pistons wound back into the calliper. The support frames need cleaning down with a wire brush and then the whole thing building back up with new pads. The rear callipers work in a very hostile environment and due to the very slow wear they do tend to seize eventually and need periodic maintenance. - L G

6)   Need the make model and year.

VW's usually have a bad parking brake cable. Nearly imposible for a rookie to disconnect. See a nice VW shop to have them check it out. Not insulting you just know what a MF those cables are.

7)   If this just started happening when the weather dropped below freezing at night, then it is probably water in the hand brake cable tube.
Stop using the hand brake at all, until you can get around to working on it.
If there is no problem when the hand brake is not used, then you can be pretty sure it is the cable.
You can tell if it is sticking because the rotor will be very hot to the touch.
The cable can be dried out by removing and spinning it rapidly in a circle over your head, so that the centrifugal force throws the water out. Then grease it by moving the sheath over greasy cable.

If it is not the hand brake, then decide it if is just one side.
If so, you will have to take the pads out to see if it is the pads or pistons that are sticking.
Pads should move freely, pistons are harder to tell.
Because of the hand brake, rear calipers have a one way ratchet on a pin in the back of the piston, that only allows for retracting while turning CW.
It is rare that pistons seized unless the boot is ripped.
If it is, you use brake pressure to force piston all the way out, clean, use new seals, brake lube, put it all back together, then bleed air out. Piston retracting tool helps, from Harbor Freight: - Motorhead

1)   Hope you got deep pockets. Po420 is cat converter code(usually doesn't kill engine)the othe codes will need diag. - s k

2)   last time I had worked on a car that did some thing like that it was the computer, keep those codes close by, have the codes cleared and drive until codes show again. find out what they are and if they are different but just as numerous then you have a computer problem. if it only comes up one or two then repair those items. - Joseph

3)   I KNOW VW PARTS ARE EXPENCIVE, AND I CANT SPELL EATHER. GOOD LUCK - gunbunny2bg4u

4)   1-4 in order from most likely to least likely
P0420 1.) Catalytic converter defective. 2.) engine misfire or running condition. 3.) large vacuum leak
p0445 1.) Bad fuel cap. 2.) evap canister or hose cracked. 3.) purge or vent solenoid defective. 4th0 vacuum leak at engine. OR FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE stop topping off with fuel, when the pump stops you stop, stop rounding up to the next dollar.
p0418 Secondary air injection fault, 1.) circuit relay defective or open, check wiring, bad air pump.

Question 4
I have an 1999 VW New Beetle and every time it rains the check engine light comes on does anyone know why?...  I had it checked and my mechanic said the code was P113 which he told me that I ran my car with low gas. Now I keep it full but the light came on after that when it rained can someone please help me.

Answers
1)   could be a sensor in the gas tank. maybe when the temp changes when it rains it messes it up. take it to a certified VW dealer it wont cost anything to have a quick look. it will if they need to replace anything tho. how does it run when the light comes on? perhaps fuel filter is letting water in? is it rotted?so many things could be wrong or maybe something so simple we look right past it. like i said VW dealer is the best way to go. - vince koloz

2)   wow thats pretty funny
never heard of that one

i beleive that generally air pressure is lower during rain
maybe and i stress maybe your car could be running rich cuz your car could be having trouble compensating for the thinner air

next time it comes on go to autozone and get the engine diagnostic code
but dont do what the store attendant says to
he is not properly trained for this
instead take the code and come back here to ask me what it measn - jared

3)   u guys are nuts more than 95 percent of time this is caused by cracks in the coil pack or bad spark plugs or bad spark plug wires get the code read next time it comes on and post on here to find out whats wrong - Chris

4)   Common Problems That Trigger the P0113 Code

* Defective Intake Air Temperature Sensor
* Dirty air filter
* Defective Mass Air Flow Sensor
* Faulty or corroded Intake Air Temperature wiring or connections

When it rains, their is more loss of current at corroded connections, and the air is denser and conducts heat better, causing cooler readings at the intake air temp sensor.

Clean the contact as the electrical fittings and the air mass sensor.
You can check the intake air temp sensor with an ohmmeter.
Zero or infinite resistance is bad. I think it is supposed to be from 100 to 500 ohms, or something. - Motorhead

Question 5
What should I do with my VW Jetta MKIII?...  I recently bought a 1997 VW Jetta with only 66,000 miles on it and I don't know if I should keep it stock (because it gets amazing MPG's) or if I should do what I have always dreamed and make a a euro tuner car? I have been at this crossroad since laying eyes upon it and I can't seem to decide. Also, if I do make it a tuner car, should I focus more on aesthetics or performance? I almost don't wanna let go of the awesome gas mileage but at the same time I have done research and have seen the massive potential it has. I can't afford to do both because at this point I am between jobs because of an unexpected medical discharge from the Army and I don't want this thing to be too much of a money pit. I'd say no more than $6,000 in it over the span of a few years is all I could do while managing to keep my current hobby (gun collecting and target shooting) in the picture. Your input would be greatly appreciated Yahoo Community, thanks and have a blessed holiday season.

Answers
1)   it's really not that good of a tuner car, it only makes about 100-110hp stock and you'll be spending a lot of cash just to have decent power. also, i highly recommend you don't rice it out(yes, even euro cars can be riced). basically, being a ricer means you spend all your cash on things like rims, a body kit, neon lights, and crap like that while having a completely stock car in terms of performance. it's really not cool at all, especially when your car doesn't make much power to begin with.

i know you like the mpg, but if you're serious about performance then my best advice would be to sell it and pick up the VR6 version. - James Dean

2)   Sell it. Buy a Porsche 550 Spyder and have it customized by George Barris. - inboxfull

Most of the owners of these cars do surprisingly little to the engine of their 2.0 Jettas and Golfs. The norm is a breezy modded airbox, chip, cams, exhaust (headers too).

Here is the order in which most guys go about making their VW their own.

1. Maintenance
2. Suspension
3. Wheels
4. Bodywork
5. Everything else - Nick
