No the tennis ball does not work. That was debunked on the show Mythbusters about a year ago.

Say "OPEN SESAME" and if that doesnt work,....get a locksmith. call tripple A

if you call the police they will do it for free but you are at the bottom of their list of things to do.

If you're a member of AAA, call them; most tow truck drivers have "slim jim" type tools that can probably open the door for you. But it won't be easy even for them; the VW uses partially shielded lock mechanisms to reduce the chances of a ":slim jim" from opening the door.
If the tow truck driver cannot open the door, they will contact a locksmith that is contracted by AAA, you will probably still have to pay something, but it will be far less than the regular rate.
I suppose if worst comes to worst, you could tow it to the dealership where some dealers can cut a key from the key code that they can obtain from VW.

VWs are a pain to work on but I guess they arent too bad of cars. You could go with a Jetta, GTI's are kind of a guys car.

I have to say owning VW and Honda. Honda is more reliable. I like VWs best, well its a VW. But being safe, reliable and holding its value? Honda has got VW beat. They have shown for many years that they are ahead of the class for holding value, reliability, better gas mileage and safer in crash tests.
But....... I just like the way VW sounds and the way it looks. Whats cool to is going to VW meets and meeting other VW lovers. They seem to be down to earth and just really cool people.
But back to the car. If you do decide to get a VW GTI. White cars are easier to sell and hold value better. Jetta is very cool to. It will come down to whether you want to take friends along or just be sportier with GTI.
Good place to read more about VWs is http://www.vwvortex.com/
Good luck....

Reliability has tended to vary greatly in VWs. Some are excellent, others have been splotchy or worse. It may have a lot to do with VWs and VW parts being built all around the globe. If you look at the window stickers on some of them, you'll see major parts listed from three continents.
Anyway, from what I understand, the Jetta and Golf (or Rabbit) are essentially the same car, with the Jetta having a trunk and the Golf being a hatch. The GTI is the much sportier version of the Golf, and it's a pretty quick, agile car. So, no the GTI's not really a girly car, but insurance adjusters aren't exactly kind to it. That may be because looking at it, people may not realize how powerful it is and get into trouble.
As far as colors go, I personally like black, white and red. All classics that never really go out of style.

DONT DO IT LOL....i got a golf last week and it broke down twice allready...i know thats just bad luck on my part but after looking around the internet trying to fix it i found out im not the only one...golfs have a misconception cos they are german but its not true....they are to complicated and go wrong a lot....personaly im going back to BMW...its the only car i can truly rely on..

Old Bugs not reliable: When you see one on the road (and you will see a lot of them), call to mind the fact that it is a least 30 years old and likely closer to 50 !
They keep on running, parts are readily available, and they are easy to work on.
They lack many of the features, safety additions, and luxury options of the newer cars, but that is more then made up for by the reliability and the acceptibility of the car. I have met more people and heard more fun stories (and dated a few ladies) via my bug then I ever did with my GM Iron.

Are Jettas a good car?
I'm looking at a 2001 jetta. It has 105,191 miles for $5,980. I know a lot of used cars (like hondas and toyotas) are fine with that many miles, but what about Jettas?

Almost any car will still run at 105k mileage. You shouldn't worry too much about it unless you intend to keep this car for more than 5 years. Jetta's are fine.

I have not been too impressed with the Mexican built Jetta but the answer to your question simply depends upon how well the car was maintained. With regular oil changes and reasonable care, the 1.8 engine should last a long time. I would expect to see maintenence records and CARFAX to show owners or I would not buy the car.
Don S
They are known to be real headaches. Nothing like Honda or Toyotas. The car is kinda nice, they just break a lot.

I don't care for volkswagen much. My friend has a newer bug with only 98K and the cylinder is already going out along with many other problems its had. They are also hard to work on, parts are expensive and so is the labor.
I would say Jetta is middle of the road. Not junk like a fords but nothing close to toyota.
I personally think volkswagen anything is priced to high for what its worth new and then the resale value is crap.

Just to say, I had a 70s (made in Mexico) beetle. Adored it.
Until the engine caught on fire and scared me. But the car was all metal and awesome beyond the whole fire thing.
Chali
If you’re looking for a safe car the beetle will not fulfill your needs. It was designed in 1938 and very little has changed since then. No airbags, no crumple zones, no ABS nothing to make it safe. And the fuel tank is at the front.
The new model will have airbags and such making it safer. Know however that the new car is also more of a fashion statement than a car. Designed to bring back the ambience of the old bug.

Probably just need a new belt, but I'm sure they'll check it out properly at the garage, then you will know.
Dale T
New head and valves . Very expensive. Been there and done it twicce, actually three times, First time I threw the car away!
Pete W
No, but as some writers have said, you'll need for sure to replace valves and re-work the head. You might get lucky and not need a new head if the machine shop is skilled enough to re-condition the correctly and its not warped excessively.
I've seen a number of these engines with the head off; though its possible you might need pistons as well, I've have yet to see an engine that needed pistons (unless the milage of the engine was high to start with and has worn cylinder walls to start with).

How much is to change the blown head gasket in 2001 passat 1.8t?

oooooooooo ! not sure about that car, but my ford expedition was $1200 to replace a blown head gasket. I'm assuming a little less. Good Luck
A-through-Z
dont replace the engine
Mr.Goodwrench
I'd not want to pay more than 1000 absolute tops. Has to depend on what the car's worth, you think? But it has to be done properly, or it'll blow again!
M
One thing to keep in Mind is when replacing the head gasket you should have a couple things done before you slap'er back together. First you should have the head checked to see if it is warped, or cracked. If it is warped you're going to have to have it machined. If it is cracked your going to need a replacement. Next you're going to wanna replace the head studs. Don't buy any old head gasket. do some research before you buy a new one. You don't want this to happen again. Good Luck.
