Get an insurance quote then decide...
It is a good reliable car if the millage is reasonable

If you are a new driver, I would suggest you buy a car with a smaller engine until you have more experience in driving, especially on motorways.

Not very sensible. Massive insurance, and you will probably write it off anyway.
BARRY B
Yes it's good car
JOHNNY C
because of the engine size it will cost a bomber for a new driver so my advice iif you on the limit with the amount you can spend on insurance is stick to the lower size engines (like say no more than a 1.4 or so) until you've got more experience of driving, it still might be possible to be allowed insurance but just beware of the high price.

Yes it is a good car. But check the insurance, and the history of the car. You need to be sure it is actually a GTI. If it is not actually one, the owner just put one on, then you could maybe get a better insurance quote.
The Reventon
Depends.
If you are looking for a car that just goes from point A to point B then no, the GTI is not for you. Get a Kia or Toyota or scooter instead.
On the other hand, if you are a Driver/enthusiast, if you love cars that thrill with their handling prowess, if you like the way your back pushes into the seat upon accelerating, then the GTI is for you.
Let me explain; I don't mean to drive recklessly or stupidly, but GTI's are for fun Driving!
Having said that, I agree that insurance may cost more. (Just a few dollars more for me as I have a perfect driver record; so far...)
And if you do get the GTI, be sure to change oil/filter with quality oil every 6000 miles.
If it has more than 80,000 miles on odometer, check to see if the timing belt has been replaced (ask to see service record of the car).
All the above applies to any make of car that you consider.
Sure hope you get the GTI; the world needs more enthusiastic and responsible drivers.
BTW, I drive a 2005 turbo GTI with 45,000 screamin' joy-filled miles on it!
Only wish GTI's were around when I was searching for my 1st car!!
fenton
They are good cars, but not as a first car.
Get something smaller (engine wise) for a couple of years and get some no claims bonus under your belt.

How can I trick out my VW Bus?
I have a good system and a bed for the 'shaggin wagon.' My paint job is just random acrylic by my kids. I have a few ideas but summer is coming and I know there is something missing. Any suggestions?

Send it to Pimp My Ride lol
Hello_Im_Jeremy
Dude, check Pimp My Ride. With the old Volksies, you can remove parts and put in other parts more easily than in other vehicles. I would suggest painting the VW Bus jet black, like a hearse. That is up to you. If your kids painted it, you might want to stick with that though. You can definitely pimp out the interior. Maybe upholster the interior with some shag carpet. The electronics would need a major overhaul to make it state of the art compared to a modern SUV or minivan by today's standards. It can be done. If you do, you might want to compare the cost to modernize the VW Bus compared to buying a brand new Ford Escape or Explorer, or a VW SUV.

so by took it off, im assuming you mean the battery cables
1. 'idiot' light means something is wrong with the engine, you just dont ignore it
2. probably gonna have to go to a dealer, bugs are know n for eletrical problems, and when you take the battery of newer cars, they get screeewed up

Eminem to take autoworkers to Jimmy Kimmel show
AP, May 12, 2009 10:21 am PDT
Eminem says he and Jimmy Kimmel will fly about 200 laid-off autoworkers to Los Angeles for Friday's taping of his appearance on Kimmel's show. The Michigan rapper says he and Kimmel want to remind everyone that real people are being affected by what's going on in Detroit.
He tells the Detroit Free Press, through his publicist, that news reports ignore people who have lost their jobs without getting big payouts after dedicating themselves to the auto industry.
Eminem says he and Kimmel also want to show some of the autoworkers "a good time while we're at it."
He's promoting the upcoming release of "Relapse," his first studio album in four years.
Eminem will also appear on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on May 19 and May 22.
this what happen when people buy cars from oversea 200 people lose their jobs!

...... I was gonna says something that wouldnt have helped her question.... but i chose the smarter path....
Please explain what you meant by "took it off". I assume your not referring to clothing?
Couldnt help myself...

Buying a new one would only be the start of you problems. The speedo in your car is coded to the immobilizer system. Changing it will cost you to get it coded otherwise it may not even run. I've never run into your problem from disconnecting the batt. So you may need to pull it again and check connections.
David S
The way to make the idiot lights go off is for the idiot to take the car in to be serviced. The service mechanic turns off the light once the problem is fixed.
Ignoring the idiot lights is like saying "Houston: we have a problem.....so I will wait till it breaks and then you can rob me blind while you fix it"...because that is what is going to happen.

Diesel Rabbit lacks power?
I got an old Rabbit Diesel and it runs ok but its really slow. Will it be faster if I put some high octane gas in it?
Asked by: knockyourteethout @ 2009-05-12 11:47:32

Its a diesel, do not put high test gas in it!! If i remember the diesel rabbit goes 0-60 in 16 seconds when they're new. So its not made to be fast.
choochamus
Just where are you going to find high octane diesel?
uthockey32
First off, you have to use diesel fuel in a diesel car. There arent varying grades of diesel.
Second off, higher octane gas doesnt make more power than normal gas. Octane just prevents the motor from predetonating, so if tuned properly, it can yield more power. If your car doesnt need premium gas, adding it will gain you absolutely nothing.
Kyle M
What the hell it is DIESEL not gas. And of course it's going to be slow its a 25+ year old 1.6l NA motor
SmyD
No! Diesel runs diesel fuel. Gas in a diesel.... no good will come of this. The old diesels were slow...and would run forever.

What is that old Volkswagen van called?
The van has like a flat front, and can be very colorful. I think its known as the hippie car, but that's just how i remember it. Does anyone know the model name of the car?

[Best Answer]Volkswagen Type 2, a bus. your most likely thinking of a split screen bus(splittie). they made them split from 1950 to 1967. from 1968-1979 and up they had a single front window(bay window bus). the motors were anywhere from 1200cc to 1800cc in the later models. they are a flat four cylinder air-cooled motor mounted in the rear of the car.

when do you change the timing belt on a 2001 VW jetta?
It was changed at 90,000 already but has 130,000 on it now so would I get it changed again at 180,000?
Asked by: Bear @ 2009-05-11 15:34:14

Yes, again at 180,000
Unless your waterpump fails and when they replace the waterpump you have to take the timing belt off anyway. So you might want to do it then, just to buy you 90,000 miles from then...

nothing but dual overhead cams, they have special fuel injection though. Its called FSI, it stands for Fuel Stratified Injection. Its supposedly one of the most accurate fuel delivery systems available. Produces a slight ticking sound at idle.
